Men's soccer 2025 - Spiny_Norman - 08-11-2025

The Stanford men's soccer team began its season over the weekend with a 2-0 exhibition win over USF. They will play 2 more exhibition matches (tomorrow vs. Cal State Bakersfield and Saturday vs. Cal Poly) before starting the season officially a week from Thursday.

The coaches poll places Stanford 13th in the country, behind ACC teams SMU (5th), Wake Forest (6th), Pitt (7th) and Clemson (9th). Also in the top 25 are NC State (14th), Duke (15th) and Virginia (17th).

Among those teams, Stanford will only play SMU, Wake and Pitt in its 8 game conference schedule. Of those, only Wake will be on the road.

Top Drawer Soccer ranked Stanford as the 4th best incoming frosh class in the country. Here's hoping for another exciting and successful season for Coach Gunn and the team.

Amen!  We might surprise some people.

Need a consistent goal scorer at forward. Last year they moved the ball well, but just didn’t have somebody to punch in the goals. When your leading scorer (Zach) plays midfield and has 5 goals, you have a major goal scoring problem. Heck Adnan tied for second at 4 as a defender. For reference, Emil Jaaskelainen of Akron scored 23 last year and the leading scorers in the championship game had 15 and 14 goals respectively.

Currently 2-1 Stanford vs. Sac St. Good to see that the quality of west coast officiating remains utter trash. Stanford started hot but lost control after the water break. Some really shaky moments on defense including giving up a pk.

3-1 at the half. Slowly regained control late in the first half.

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - Hieronymus - 08-21-2025

Finishes 5-1. Some of the Frosh look good - Pymm especially looked very good.

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - BACardinal - 08-25-2025

Stanford upset #4 Denver 2-1 at home last night. Schnebly had a pk save late in the second half.

I was really impressed with the freshman.

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - Spiny_Norman - 08-25-2025

I like how the men's schedule has been constructed. They have a tough stretch in September where they go to Louisville for a Friday match, back to Stanford for a Tuesday match vs. St. Marys, then all the way to Syracuse for a match on Saturday. But all of that travel happens before school starts.

After Sept 13 at Syracuse, Stanford only has one more road trip during the regular season - at Wake Forest. Every other match will be played in the Bay Area.

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - ca245 - 08-25-2025

The women played in the afternoon, winning in a rout (4-1).
Both game were streamed live on ACCNX. The men's game had multiple cameras (I counted at least 4 different camera angles), replays of key instances, and DVSports reviews of key calls (two handballs in Stanford penalty area). The women's game had none of these: a single camera, no replays. Anyone know why the women were "shortchanged", especially considering both games were played on the same day?

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - Spiny_Norman - 08-27-2025

Stanford up to 4th in the coaches poll.

https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-men/d1/united-soccer-coaches

ACC occupies 6 of the top 9 spots and 10 of the top 17:
3. Pitt
4. Stanford
5. Wake Forest
6. Clemson
8. NC State
9. Duke
11. Virginia
12. Virginia Tech
15. North Carolina
17. Cal

Stanford will play 4 of those 9 in conference play - Pitt and Virginia Tech at home, Wake Forest and Cal away.

Men beat Santa Clara 2:1 after going down 1:0. This is a very good team right now. Officiating has even been competent the last 2 games.

Hope so. Santa Clara's 0-1-2 and their two ties are to Cleveland State and UC-Davis. Cleveland State is 0-1-1 and lost to Grand Canyon, 3-1. Davis is 0-1-2 with a tie to Washington and a loss to USF

Glad to hear all these great reports.  While being in the ACC maybe mean very ugly travel issues, but across a lot of sports, the ACC schools generally field tough teams.  We can complain about the travel, but I am sure their teams that have to come West may feel the same way.  The level of competition across most sports will be high which I think is meaningful when it comes to recruiting.

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - Hieronymus - 08-31-2025

First half ends 0:0 vs. UCD in what has been a dreadful game. I can’t remember a single legitimate chance for either team. UCD barely plays soccer, and the result has barely been a soccer game. Stanford has to stop responding to boot ball with more boot ball. Get the ball under control and on the ground and play soccer. Ref is wholly inadequate to the physicality today.

Finishes 1:0:Stanford. Stone with his first career goal on a play that was half persistence and half skill. Both teams played somewhat better in the second half. It at least looked like a soccer game.

- Pymm and Partal looked like Frosh a lot of this game for the first time.
- 33 fouls and one card is Uruguay / Copa America level bullshit. For reference expect a card on average every 7-7.5 fouls. Just embarrassing.
- Crossing to Chow is not useful.
- not a big de Flores fan. He doesn’t get anything done, and missed one while one on one with goalie he needed to score today.
- Zach was basically a punching bag all game.
- the Dylan and Alfonso CB conversion experience is going shockingly well so far.

It’s a win. Moving on.

Top drawer has both Stanford soccer teams at # 1

The Coaches Poll now has both #1 too.  Unanimous #1s for both soccer teams!

I guess that settles that.  We're a football school (the FIFA kind)

2017 Stanford was the first and only time a school won the NCAA title in both men’s and women’s soccer. I think we made a good claim to be a “football” school at that point.

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - BACardinal - 09-05-2025

On the ESPN app it says the Louisville game isn't streaming until 3:00pm today. The schedule says it was supposed to start at 8:00am. Is anyone else having trouble viewing the game?

RE: Men's soccer 2025 - BostonCard - 09-05-2025

40 minutes into the first half, Stanford is outshooting Louisville 7-2, but Louisville is up 1-nil.
