Re: Basketball shrinkage - 97fan - 07-01-2010

The news about Owens is unfortunate. Josh wants to get back on the court, and he could be an important part of the team. It\'s hard to argue with Stanford\'s doctors on this issue, though.

I see the loss of Will Paul and the decision not to give a fifth year to Da\'Veed Dildy - which I think has been widely expected - as long-term positives. Now Dawkins needs to build on the recruiting success he had last year.

Stanford is now one of four favorites - along with Illinois, Purdue and Indiana - to sign Chasson Randle of Illinois, who is Scout\'s #7 rated PG. Randle would be a very important addition. Unfortunately, it looks like Duke has recently become interested; I fear that an offer will be forthcoming soon.

Did Dildy ever do diddly? - Redrum - 07-01-2010

Sorry.  Been waiting four years to ask that.   His scholarship offer was a mystery when it occurred.  IIRC, he had no major college offers.  The explanation was that Dildy was this guy who was overlooked but who had intangibles that could really make him a contributor.  (Hmmm, sounds a bit like JH)  All I know about his Dildy\'s actual contribution is that I hardly ever heard his named mentioned.  Maybe people who actually follow basketball have a better idea of his contribution to the team.

I guess it\'s great--also somewhat Harbaughesque-- that there is more turnover to free up scholarships.  But another mediocre season added to the past two weakens Dawkins\' pitch about momentum building in the program.  Having Will Paul, I suspect,  would have added needed experience and size to a team short on the both.

Re: Basketball shrinkage - 97fan - 07-01-2010

Will Paul did not give us much during the last season he played, 2008-2009: he averaged 4.0 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2.8 fouls in 13 minutes per game. So I\'d rather give his minutes to young guys who are part of the team\'s future.

We actually have pretty good depth, though little experience, in terms of bigs:

Jack Trotter
Andrew Zimmerman
Andy Brown
Dwight Powell
Stefan Nastic
John Gage

Even without Will Paul, I see no reason why one of the frosh big men can\'t redshirt.

Not to get argumentative - Redrum - 07-01-2010

but wasn\'t Trotter a walk-on?  Zimmerman a transfer from Santa Clara with not a load of stats behind him?   Andy Brown coming off a bad knee injury?    I never saw Paul\'s game, so maybe he isn\'t our answer for bigs.   But I don\'t see any of the above guys being a dramatically bigger contributor,  although a lot of people like Trotter for his intangibles.    Landry was such a force last year,  it\'s hard to know what these guys\' stats would be on a Landry-less team.  Guess we\'ll find out.

Re: Basketball shrinkage - 97fan - 07-01-2010

I wasn\'t trying to argue that our bigs will be all that good this season, only that there\'s no reason to think that Will Paul would be any better.

Garvin makes a good point about our returning bigs being undersized, and it may be that Andy Brown is a three, not a four. I would point out, though, that Will Paul played incredibly small for someone who was 6\'10".

Good find Garvin.  Per Wilner:

"* The Cardinal will have at least one scholarship available for November — the one currently belonging to Da’Veed Dildy — and two scholys if Owens does not return."

Is there anything we can do with that extra scholy for November?  Sign another incoming freshman, or are there any walk-ons deserving of a 1-year scholy?

I just wonder that if we aren\'t going to give a 5th year senior his last year of scholarship, Dawkins might be thinking of other plans for it....

Re: Basketball shrinkage - Nan3cy - 07-01-2010

When Wilner talks about a scholie available for November, I think he\'s talking about the November signing date for next fall\'s freshmen -- isn\'t he?

And as for what Trent saw in Dildy, I think it may be mostly the fact that he could get past admissions... :-?

Re: Basketball shrinkage - BobK - 07-02-2010

I believe Didly graduated and moved on, not cut as some here assume.  He would have been in his 5th year, not a redshirt JR.

Don\'t know what happened with Paul, would be interesting to know. Not that I think he would have played much.

Don\'t count out Owens.  That comment he may transfer is not from a Stanford coach, they all know his g/f is in the same class as Owens, graduating with Owens next June.

My bet, Wilner spoke to Dawkins like 10 days ago.

Great news: Josh Owens has been cleared to rejoin the team.  Will really help the front line! 8-)

You can\'t beat experience though.
