Thanks Spiny.
FYI, this is presented under the auspices of the Alumni Assn, and (for me at least) it was necessary to login with my Alumni Assn credentials in order to register for the event.
In any case, looking forward to it.

Actually, quite a few season ticket holders chimed in, and Rod Gilmore steadily moderated the discussion.
#1 question was "Next coach" -- Luck said
a) He is in a lot of conversations, college and NFL
And, he cannot complete many of those conversations right now, mid season. He knows a LOT of people.
b) He is more focused on whatever coaching staff and players need; he is not weighing in on play calling at all, and that is not his job. He leaves the games to Reich.
c) He has FULL backing from Levin and others on Faculty... unlike MTL clueless era.
d) He continues to believe that the mix of High Quality Academics and "we are serious about Football" offers a "unique package" for the right coach, AND there are enough 4-star players to get with academic pluses.
#2 Yes, the Transfer Portal HURT the first three years badly, but this year we started to turn it around with 17 inbound, and they are playing. Gulbranson, CJ Williams
It sounds to me Luck likes the job for an enduring outlook, and he can be inspiring to the younger crowd with his college and NFL record.
In hindsight, Reich might have been a good call as Interim, and Reich did it because Luck used a chit and the challenge was intriguing enough. And I think Reich likes the atmosphere and attitude of players.
We don't have 5-stars, but we can be more competitive if the Next Coach is a good fit.
Bowlsby took a shot with Harbaugh in 2007.
Who knew from USD?
Luck is confident we will have several solid candidates from which to choose.
And Luck believes the Transfer Portal will help us as we solidify the coaching decision. No panic.

Thanks for the summary. I enjoyed Andrew’s infectious enthusiasm and energy. That’s the glue that makes all of this possible, imho, and why I am optimistic about the future.

I also enjoyed the anecdote about the university throwing a pre-game tailgate for students at Meyer Green (much better than Meyer Library), and some donor provided #29 shirts to all frosh who wanted them (looked like replica jerseys on TV) to wear for the next 4 years (and beyond). Then a thousand(?) students marched together from Meyer to the stadium, led by Andrew on the motorized sofa (or something like that). I support the General.

We need another 2 years of transfer reinforcements to steady the ship, but he's right. 6 of our starters vs. SJSU were transfers acquired this offseason (Gulbranson, Williams, High, Prongos, Barth, Johnson), and 2 more starters came in last year (Patterson, Green). And it should've been even more if not for the injury bug (Pantelis, Mejia, Fattig, Galvan, Washington).
I would've never believed just a few years ago that in the immediate future Stanford would have double-digit transfers, let alone starters.

The metric should not be whether the start or not, but whether they finish. If transfer portal players graduate at a similar clip as others, great. But if this turns into a bunch of one and two-year rent a player contracts, then we should step off this train.

In general I agree. However, a confounding factor is the fact that athletes admitted as freshmen to Stanford in many cases themselves transfer, some without degrees. These are also in some sense "rent a players". It is unclear to me the transfers leaving without a degree are any different. The more serious question is how athletes can keep playing without making "adequate progress towards graduation". Leaving for the NFL is today "normal". Leaving for a "better offer" is also now normal. I guess one could monitor/follow all athletes that come through Stanford and look at their ultimate graduation rates to determine if staying on the train is reasonable, but for some reason I doubt anyone will. Graduation rates were tricky enough when people stayed at the same school. Now, with people transferring multiple times it is even more difficult to monitor and interpret.

There's no real data to interpret. The NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) counts student-athletes who transfer in (the new college gets to count them as a success if they graduate). But transfers out are simply removed from the original school's calculation entirely. However, transfers out do impact a school's overall student retention and graduation rates (whether athletes or not).

I agree with Square that BG probably gives us the best chance for success this year. However, I just watched BYU roll over WV 38-24. Bachmier was 18-35 for over 350 yds, and over 50 yds rushing. So, can anyone refresh my memory? Taylor had left and Bachmier was still here. Was he told he wouldn't start? If so, it's GD unfortunate .It looks like he gets better every game. I wish it were on the Farm, because, barring injury, he is going to be terrific.
PS: Why West Va? My nephew goes there and I record their games if available to applaud or console.

In response to the above post one needs to remember that BYU as a team is talented as outline in the attached article on the Big 12.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/45703435/2025-big-12-college-football-preview-colorado-arizona-state
BYU has been favored to date in all the games they have played. The games played at home have been blow outs. Their schedule becomes much harder in the weeks a head with Arizona, Utah, Iowa St., Texas Tech., TCU, Cincinnati and UCF.
I think the young Mr. Bachmier has benefited from being on team with talent, playing a not so demanding schedule to this point and a set coaching staff. I do wish both of the Bachmiers the best now and in the future.

Regarding Bear and Tiger, I have heard that BYU came with significant NIL dollars in hand to "help" convince them of a move to Ogden. NIL money is going to be what's needed to dig out of this hole. As our coaches have stated, we don't need to be the highest offer, but we need to be in the ballpark. Maxime could have received more money last year, but he valued the Stanford experience/degree and appreciated that we came to the table with something respectable. We need more quality student athletes like him in this new NIL world. It should be easier to do in hoops, given the numbers, but I'm optimistic Andrew and JD will figure out a strong path for football.
