Gameday Experience - crackpot - 09-14-2025

It was a much greater crowd than we had anticipated, and everyone was into it, even from the start.

Did anyone get their discount while ordering concessions? I had my code ready, and was glad I didn't have to memorize it, but their message

Your 2025 STM Discount Pass has been added to your account. Please download your pass to your mobile wallet and present it to the cashier when placing your order to apply the STM discount at checkout. You will not need to remember or enter a code to receive your discount.

...was not my experience. I showed the cashier my phone, and she had no idea what I was talking about. "It's our first week." I mean, c'mon, this was a SIGNIFICANT discount and already way-overpriced hot dogs and drinks.

I didn't buy anything at the concessions, but for what it's worth the Buck-Cardinal Club "hospitality" area was much less hospitable than last year.  Almost no snacks available, long lines for drinks, and the beer selection wasn't great.

On TV the crowd looked bigger than I expected -- a little less than half full maybe?

I just saw the game had been designated Faculty-Staff appreciation night.  All active faculty and staff were offered $2 tickets (limit of 5) for the game - wondering the impact on actual attendance.

RE: Gameday Experience - Treebound - 09-14-2025

Did anyone have challenges driving in from Embarcadero?!  They closed the first roundabout and directed all westbound traffic north to University.  That's the first time they have done that and it caused many people heading into Chuck Taylor and the Sunken Diamond lot to lose tailgate time.  Nothing like making it more challenging for your most loyal fans!  Would love to understand the logic...or lack thereof.

My experience with the STM Discount Pass was similar.  I tried using the pass when I was prompted for payment, figuring that it would cause the total to be recomputed before I submitted a real payment.  Alas, all I got was an error message.

I asked the cashier, who actually brought someone over who did seem to understand.  He said they had already granted the appropriate discount, and indeed that was the case.  But I'm not sure exactly what made that happen, and whether it's repeatable.

So it goes....

Weird ...

My discount worked first time on a foot-long hot link.  I had printed the barcode for easy scanning but the server looked at my print out and just punched in the code himself. No hassle. Sounds like I was lucky. They staff a lot of the concessions with "volunteers" whose organizations get paid for providing free labor. I had a friend whose son is in a Cub Scout group who works one of the stands for free. There's probably something to the "first game" story.

The Buck Cardinal club had free Chik-Fil-A chicken sandwiches pre-game which tasted just fine. The free Buck Cardinal beers this week were Modelo Especial and Trumer Pils which also went down fine for us.  I drank two pre-game and one at half just to make sure my quality assessment was accurate. My season tix partner grabbed a red wine at halftime but I stuck with my pilsner so no comment on that. Don't judge, I needed that third beer to be absolutely sure of the quality.

For half time the big snack was popcorn.  I'm not a popcorn guy but the Trumer was still cold so I left happy and grabbed the above mentioned hot link to chase it down. Yes, there was more snack variety in games past but I think they were trying to up the quality and this was "gourmet" popcorn. (Forget the name). Eh ... I might have preferred a chip bag but to each his own and as mentioned, I'm not a popcorn guy.

Joking aside-It will take several more years before I complain about "free" beer at Stanford Stadium.  Didn't we go 30 years with NO paid beer option? Like they confiscated it at the gate and didn't sell it anywhere?  And at San Jose State, where I occassionally take in a game it was $14/glass. It will take at least five years (estimate) before I complain about my free Modelo/Trumer.  But then I'm not an IPA guy and your opinions/tastes may vary...  Never got why bitter/overly hoppy beer is so popular.

For those of us who like hoppy beer, please bring back the Drake's IPA!

Well, I just hope that at the 2026 Reunion Weekend game I can get Modelo Negra.

Good points, I never complain about a decent Pilsner, too much time spent in Europe I guess.

IPA, Pilsner, Oktoberfest, Stout. I like most of them, depends on the mood and the food. Can't get behind the fruit flavored versions or the chocolate this-and-that. Prefer no aftertaste, bitter or otherwise.

I was not happy with the traffic restrictions on Galvez. They made it unnecessarily difficult to get where I needed to go. It's a good thing that I arrived very early and that the crowd was not very big.

I’m coming up for Reunion Weekend Oct16-18. The FSU game is 7:30 Sat nite. Access and parking, especially on Saturday, will be a real zoo.
