RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2026 - Spiny_Norman - 09-16-2025

Stanford was in 3rd and outside of the cut line with 4 holes to play. But the putts fell for the Cardinal and not for the Ducks. Stanford passed Oregon to finish 2nd behind Wake Forest in stroke play. Stanford plays the Demon Deacons for the championship tomorrow, a rematch of the 2025 ACC semifinal won by Wake.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2026 - Spiny_Norman - 09-17-2025

Wake defeated Stanford today 3-2. Despite not making a birdie until the 16th hole, Ganne defeated the overall medalist Macy Pate. Revuelta played best of all and never trailed in winning her match.

On the other hand, Martin Sampedro never led and lost 4 and 3. Ortengren 3 putted the 18th to lose 1 up. A 2 putt would have sent her match to extra holes. It all came down to Xu's match. She missed several makeable putts coming down the stretch including one on 18 for birdie that would have won the match. She ended up losing on the 20th hole.

Stanford and Wake will likely face off again several times over the course of the season. NCAAs are only 9 months away!

Women's golf finished their fall season today with a comeback win in Hawaii.  They had an incredible past two tournaments

Stanford Intercollegiate Oct 17-19
Nanea Invitational Oct 27-29
Can't wait to see what they can do in the spring.

This team is a beast.  FEAR THE TREE!!

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2026 - Hulk01 - 10-30-2025

Over. top ten teams #2 USC, #3 Oregon, #7 Auburn, #9 Pepperdine,
and #10 Texas, this Stanford team has won by two strokes
per player per round:
 by 21 over Oregon,
23 over Auburn,
25 over USC and Texas, and
27 over Pepperdine.

Sampedro, Reveulta, Ganne, and Ortengten rank 2, 3, 4, and 5 in the world.

Is there a precedent for this college team in any sport in any year?

Makes the Dream Team look like punters?
But watch out that match play doesn't bite you on the butt!

Yes, match play is the great equalizer.  Still, this lineup has the potential to cause opponents to lose hope.  FEAR THE TREE!!

In April 2024, the #1 ranked Auburn Men's Golf team made a clean sweep in winning the Mossy Oaks Collegiate golf tournament.  Their five team players all finished in the top 5 and the 6th place player (from Mississippi State) finished a stroke back of Auburn's 5th best player.

Although no Stanford player finished below T5, there were some non-Stanford players in there.  So Stanford still has a goal to achieve - a clean sweep like Auburn's.

Good news though.  Auburn went on to win the 2024 NCAA Men's Golf Championship.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2026 - Hulk01 - 10-30-2025

As I once learned, being an absurd underdog certainly can help.

My junior year of high school. I had a match against the #2 player in the state.
I never worried; no one expected me to fare between than a 3 and 2 loss.
We tied.

Of great help: my opponent was 1 up going into 18.
I felt great; I wasn't going to get crucified; coach'd pat me on the back.

I calmly posted a two-putt bogey on the absurdly difficult, uphill,
into the wind, damp fairway, sea level, 555 yard par 5 18th.
It played at least 620, and with balata balls
and persimmon woods.

He knocked one ob on his second shot on 18.
Missed the green.
Anyway, we ended up tied for 18.
(Oregon didn't have extra holes for regular season mathes.)

If I had been one up, I might've choked on that last hole.

So, no team will expect to beat us in match play.
(Except Wake Forest, who likely will fear that their luck is over.)

We'll need to be very good.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2026 - Spiny_Norman - 10-30-2025

Fall golf season is for giving new players a chance to show what they can do and seeing if a top 5 lineup emerges. Stanford did not need any of that. The top 5 lineup is set (assuming that no one leaves or gets injured between now and February). Stanford does have 2 freshmen but they are not expected to contribute this year. They did get a chance to play as individuals in a couple of tournaments to get some collegiate experience.

Coach Walker and the team go into the break feeling like they are on track but there is still work to do. Golf is so mentally draining that it's good to have a few months without competitions to recharge. Work on your short game. Work on putting under the pressure of match play. Work on physical and mental conditioning.

It's hard to know exactly where the biggest challengers will come from in the spring. Some teams might pick up mid-year freshman enrollees who become contributors right away. Some players might opt to try for an LPGA card and give up their collegiate eligibility. But Stanford knows that even though Northwestern is the defending national champ everyone will be gunning for the Cardinal.

In Anne Walker We Trust. She is the best golf coach in the country and even her peers agree.

Maybe men’s gymnastics in the Brody Malone era?

I doubt it and I agree that Coach Walker is clearly the best.  But I have to wonder if she would prefer Stroke or Match play to determine the NCAA. If she choose Stroke Play it is pretty obvious why, but I think she would choose match play and let the results speak for themselves.  I think big stroke play matches really help build top players mental game.

An anonymous poll of D1 W college golf coaches says:
Match play: 54 (54.5%)
Stroke play: 45 (45.5%)
The results: Less women's coaches responded to this question, but the results are similar. The women moved to match play in 2015, and the biggest argument for stroke play is Stanford. The Cardinal have won the stroke-play portion at NCAAs five consecutive seasons yet only has two national championships to show for it. However, in a slightly wider margin than the men, of women's coaches who responded, they're slightly more in favor of match play to determine a champion than stroke play.

The women's cannot think that five 18 rounds of match play
is the best way to determine the best team in college golf.

It's just the most telegenic way;
the best way to draw fans to the televised championship final;
and the best way to give a team other than Stanford
a chance of winning the title.

And I admit it's more exciting for me--
although "more nail-biting"  may be more accurate.
