Congrats To Toby Gerhart For His Retroactive 2009 Voldemort Trophy! -

Also to Robert Griffin, who is a very good player in his own right.

Luck was player-of-the-year. RG3 is
your American Idol.Â
Nice to see Luck win the west and northeast.Â

Voldemort is dead to me now. I don't care about this beauty contest anymore.

I feel bad for Andrew, the team, and Stanford. I really feel that RG3 winning the trophy is not a brobdingnagian injustice. I would have preferred Luck win, but Griffin had a spectacular season. Toby not winning, in contrast, was an enormous injustice. That is when I gave up all hope of the Voldemort being "fair," by my personal reckoning.
If I had my druthers (I don't really talk like that, but it seemed like the right thing to say in advance of the Fiesta Bowl.), I'd start a campaign to elevate some other award decided on a less arbitrary basis to the premier annual award. I also think about Trent Richardson--without even getting into the "best-player-on-best-team" argument. He was allegedly the voters favorite after Alabama's last game. What did he do that caused him to fall to third place? I know. Not play the final week.
The process stinks. Not the winner.

Time to move on.
Not such a big deal to Andrew Luck and it has more meaning to him than to anyone else. He's so mature and has such great perspective. I don't think he takes it as a slight or that it is a true reflection of who he is or how good he is. It is a vote at a moment in time. A very imperfect vote by people - most of whom have very little idea of what they are doing - starting with what the vote is even for (this is the biggest issue to me) and then not knowing much about the players they're voting for.
I think one positive outcome of the controversial vote is that there was a lot more attention and discussion about the relative merits of all the players and the voting process. Andrew Luck and Stanford may not have come out on top for most of the voters but for a lot of young student/athletes and their parents, I hope they heard and saw a clear picture of what makes Stanford a great school to play football at and the quality and character of the student/athletes that come here. We'll never be the most popular but that's OK because we can only accept the most special. And we adhere and perform to our own standards. Sometimes the rest of the world appreciates our way and sometimes they don't. But we will not yield.
Time to focus on Oklahoma State.

You will the next time a Stanford player is in contention for it.

Honey badger, III and Luck were all worthy winners.

Hard to envision when that might happen again. Not sure anybody on our roster now has the potential.

I think Stepfan Taylor is perfectly positioned to finish in second place.

I love Stepfan. He might have a breakout year and make a run for it. But I don't think the odds are stacked in his favor. Looks like the contributing factors are:
* Be a contributor all season, don't get injured (should be OK here but you never know).
* Don't have a "bad" game, certainly not in the latter part of the season.
* Play for a team in contention for a BCS bowl game (could be a big problem for us next season)
* Put up some Sports Center highlight plays. (Might not be a problem for Taylor but have to do it in multiple games)
* Get loved by "pundits" all over the country (won't be watching our games next season)
* Play in a major conference championship game at the end of the season. (Big problem for us. Oregon still in Pac-12 north next season.)

Probably didn't make it obviously, but the tongue was very firmly in cheek for that one. We'll probably be rotating through four running backs next season.
Anyway, Hitchcock never won a Best Director Oscar. Awards voters are distracted by shiny objects all of the time.
Our next Voldemort candidate -

Maybe no one on our current roster, but....
.......how about Barry Sanders, Jr?
Yeah it's a long shot, but long shots have been known to come in.
