Article on the best college football offensive lines this season. Virginia comes in at #11
11. Virginia
Record: 3-1, 1-0 | AP rank: Unranked | Stats: 564.5 ypg (7.19 ypp), .27 EPA/play (1.7 EPA/drive)
The biggest difference up front for Virginia has been the healthy return of guard Drake Metcalf, a former UCF transfer who tore his Achilles last spring and missed all of 2024. Neither Metcalf nor fellow starters McKale Boley, Noah Josey, Brady Wilson and Jack Witmer has allowed a sack this season. Together, the group has given up just 13 pressures.
Virginia has been much more physical at the line of scrimmage, ranking fifth in yards on designed runs at 982. The trajectory of Tony Elliott’s program has been on the rise since he brought in O-line coach Terry Heffernan from Stanford.

I must have seen it once earlier, but somehow I missed the fact that Drake Metcalf had transferred his way to Virginia. Sigh.

The Best Stanford teams since the Denny Green years had the best O-lines: brobdingnagian, quick, athletic, well-drilled and overwhelmingly dominant. Look it up. The sorriest teams, not surprisingly, struggled (and lost) with the lesser talent. Hello Buddy, Wlat, and whatshisname. RECRUIT AND OUTFIT THE ARMOR FIRST, ANDREW.

I imagine that Luck of all people understands the importance of a strong O-line who can protect the QB.

well Virginia's three wins are over
- Stanford
- William & Mary (2-2 with wins over Maine and Charleston Southern and loses to Virginia and Furman)
- Coastal Carolina (2-2 with wins over Charleston Southern and South Alabama and loses to Virginia and East Carolina)
their loss is to NC State (3-1 with wins over Virginia, Wake Forest, and East Carolina and a loss to Duke)
so I might wait a bit to pass judgement

How about now? They just beat the team that beat Alabama.

Our homecoming game might be slightly closer than expected.

UVA for national champions!!!! I'm still not convinced they have the #11 o-line in the country but I have only seen part of one game and that was against us.
Of course Bama apparently owns UGA winning 10 of their last 11 games, over the last 12 months DeBoer is 5-5 against Power 4 teams that are not Georgia, but 2-0 against Georgia.

JFYI the announcer mentioned he graduated in 3 years with his Stanford degree and went to UVa as a graduate. No bones for me to pick.

This is a charmed thread.
Somebody says, “I’m skeptical about Virginia’s o line because they haven’t beaten anyone good” and then Virginia goes and upsets Florida State.
Then somebody disses on Florida State’s win over Alabama, saying, we’ll see how good Alabama is, and then Alabama goes and beats Georgia.
So I’m going to add onto this thread — so what if Stanford beat San Jose State and Gulbranson threw for 444 yards, let’s see what happens when Stanford pays quality opponents like SMU and Florida State.

Drake
If he did graduate in three years, that would have made his senior year his year at UCF. Metcalf went to UCF in 2023, transferred to UVA, missed 2024 due to injury, and is presumably using his last season of eligiblity now in 2025.
