But he will always be dear to me for his clock mismanagement in 2015, which enabled us to score with 25 seconds remaining and keep up an amazing season.

Good.  He should’ve been fired for that tower tragedy  while at Notre Dame.

Back in the days when I was on the sidelines, I had a rare occasion to be on the visitor side. Kelly  was coaching. Something happened on a kick off that ticked him off. As a player was running off he got in his face and screamed “when are you going to grow a pair.” What a great job of coaching!

One of  the true assholes of the sport.

I really wonder about the economics of all this and the apparently bottomless cup of donor money chasing one national title a year among 20 hyper-expensive coaches with massive buyouts.

Think the Virginia model might be the right one. Don't pay the coach an insane amount of money to go away while you rinse and repeat; dump the opportunity cost money into NIL and buy better players.

Elliott makes a pedestrian (these days) $4.4 million per annum with an $11 million buyout this year. Would have been relatively easy to do.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has weighed in on Brian Kelly's buyout in particular, and astronomical coaching buyouts in general. 
Now I don't know if he's right about the LSU Board of Supervisors hiring their next football coach.  But at least he decided to say something.
