5th Democracy Day 11/4 -
chrisk - 10-28-2025
From Stanford Report:
Tuesday, Nov. 4, will mark Stanford’s fifth Democracy Day, a university-wide academic holiday held annually on U.S. Election Day, when classes pause and the campus turns its focus toward civic engagement and learning...
Student-athletes also have a day off from practice and play, thanks to the “All Vote No Play” legislation passed in 2020 by the NCAA to boost civic engagement – an effort basketball coach Eric Reveno helped lead.

I think you were clear but just so I get it, do you mean that football doesn’t practice on November 4 , a Tuesday? That would make this among the most popular holidays on the university calendar.

Football still practices on Democracy day. They claim to give the players a day off in the offseason to offset this.

Thanks. Makes sense.

Had an email exchange with Eric Reveno when he was at Tech telling him how awesome I thought this was.
Don't quite understand the comp time aspect of this. Thought the idea was to let people be able to physically vote on Election Day and not assume everyone did it by mail. Some other day isn't Election Day.

In 2021 all sports were given Democracy Day off. Since 2022, for in-season sports, the day off must be taken between 15 days before and 15 days after Democracy Day.

Football still practiced on Democracy Day in 2021. I'm guessing football will get an extra "off day" during their upcoming bye week to get their day off.

Sounds like a job. "Hey, they got a day off. When do I get mine?"
If taking that particular day off from practice isn't acceptable to the coach, then why do the players need a different day off unless there is a NCAA or conference rule requiring it? Are they asking for overtime pay?
