WBB: Stanford 79 -- Santa Clara 58 - triangle2 - 11-06-2025

Not going to pretend that I can live up to 81alum's fantastic previews, but I did note a couple of things about tonight's game vs. Santa Clara.

Santa Clara has a new coach, former UW star Loree Payne, who had a 136-116 record at Northern Arizona before taking the Santa Clara job. Payne has said that they will be running an up-tempo offense this season.

I think Payne has developed a good reputation as a coach, but she sure dropped herself into a dumpster fire. Santa Clara went into a complete rebuild after last season and has only two returning players, along with 6 freshman and 7 transfers (including some players who followed Payne from N. Arizona). Their top returning player is senior forward Alana Goodchild from Australia, who appeared in 31 games last season off the bench. Santa Clara doesn't have anyone on the roster taller than 6'2".

They ran all over Stanislaus State in their home opener, 108-52.

Starting: Lepolo, Agara, Swain, Eschmeyer and Shay Igiwoye

SC is being very aggressive and it's messing up our rythym.

Hmm. When they actually started the game it was Ogden not Shay in the starting lineup.

Not an inspiring first 6 minutes, but the refs are also incredibly whistle happy.

Really happy to see rim protection from Eschmeyer. Exactly what we didn't have last year.

Seems like Eschmeyer is open, posting up, sealed and we don't even look to throw the ball inside to her. We are so focused on running the offense that we aren't even looking for the open player or best looks. Freshman are carrying the load again so far.

Question was asked at the chalk talk about this. One of many things they are working on.

Who had Agara on their scorecard as our top 3 point shooter?

Nice, good to hear! Any other chalk talk insights?

I don't think Swain's style of play will endear her to her teammates.

Sloppy play by us
Efficient play by SC
1 point game

What a bizzare statement. She's aggressive, unafraid as a freshman, and our success this season is gonna heavily depend on her leading this team. She's the highest ranked point guard recruit Stanford has had since Kiana Williams.  Teammates love winners.

I wasn't sure what that meant either. I feel like if anything at times she has been infected with the same disease our team has long had, of passing around the perimeter until we get sloppy and turn it over.

My country for an assist. I think we have more free throws than made baskets, maybe by a margin of 2 to 1?

Teammates don't love it when you don't pass the ball to a wide open player on a fast break when you are double-teamed and force a bad shot.  IMO she needs to share the ball more, that's all.  You can be aggressive without hogging the ball.

I thought this game maybe close to putting it in the books
But turns out it’s being kept wide open for an audit
