MBB: Stanford 77 -- Montana State 68 - skip75 - 11-12-2025

Stanford wraps up the Big Sky portion of their schedule tonight against the Montana State Bobcats.  Stanford is favored by 14.5, the over/under is 150.5, making the implied score 82.5-68.  Stanford received a vote in the AP Top 25 poll this week for the first time since Week 2 of the 2020-21 season.

The Bobcats finished 5th in the Big Sky last season (and lost in the Big Sky tourney semi-finals) and are picked to finish 5th & 6th this season by the preseason coaches and media polls.  Their roster includes 5 returnees, 7 transfers, and 3 freshmen.  They opened the season with a 84-78 loss at Colorado, followed by 2 home games - a 114-44 win over Northwest Indian College and a a 75-73 loss to Denver.  They have some impressive shooting stats - 55.7% FGs, 40.9% 3s, 12 3s per game.

Expected starting line-up includes 2 returnees (both 4-year Bobcats!) and 3 transfers:
#1 Patrick McMahon 6'7/200 RSr G  Former Alaska Gatorade PoY, leads the team in scoring (17.5 ppg);
#24 Jed Miller 6'2/185 Sr G  14.0 ppg, leads team with 10 steals, 5.3 rpg, 2.6 apg and 9 3s (in 17 attempts);
#7 Christian King 6'8/210 RSo F  Transfer from Washington, 11.3 ppg;
#4 Cavin Holden 6'2/175 Jr G  Transfer from Div II Central Washington where he was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference PoY;
#21 Chris Hodges 6'9/240 Gr F  Transfer from Wisconsin;
Providing a spark off the bench is #0 Davian Brown (6'3/180 Gr G) with 15.7 ppg. He is in his 6th year of college basketball (has played in 150 games!), previously playing at The Masters University, Lewis & Clark State, and Biola.  Not sure how that works, but I assume it's got something to do with spending 4 years at 2 NAIA schools??

I'm looking forward to getting my first in-person look at this Stanford team.

Gealer scored the first 8 pts for us, and Okorie has 4, but it is by no means a lopsided game as we lead 18-13 with 10:54 to go in 1H.

Stanford up, 36-31 at the half. Haven't been able to watch, but I see Portland State getting waxed by the USF Dons (down by 20 in the first half). And did anybody watch either Wake, Florida State or Louisville last night? Each looked very impressive to my eyes.

This Stanford team is by no means going to waltz to 20 wins. Yes, we as fans are right to expect better than second-to-last in the ACC (as voted in the media poll), but no way would I vote this Stanford squad as a top 25 team.

Even game shooting, except they are fouling more, and we have made 9 of 11 FTs.
We've got big guys taking 3s outside that don't look good.
Let the guards shoot those.  We are only 3 of 11 from the arc.
Balanced scoring by Cardinal... Gealer is the only one making 3s.
Okorie needs to bust loose in the second half.

Yes Montana State hanging around much closer than comfort
At halftime report the sportscaster bragged on the ACC saying it was notably improved over last year
Predicted 8 teams to make March madness, which is way more than I’d have guessed
We’ll see
As to tonight I hope Coach Smith made good adjustments and emphasis at halftime
In Coach I trust

So far in 2nd half, not playing like a Coach Smith team
As our defense not that tight

Cameron Grant jacking up 3’s isn’t my recipe for a win
Seems like without Okorie running a dynamic attack we are flat, predictable, slow, and otherwise ineffective

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7PM, ACCNX - BostonCard - 11-12-2025

yikes!  We are trailing 48-51

SkiBum80 - SkiBum80 - 11-12-2025

Getting our asses kicked
Hope Coach kicks em some more during the time out, as we look like a day late & a dollar short

Offense is a disaster.  Horrible shot selection, nothing in sync.

Every possession should go through Okorie but on a lot of them he's just standing on the perimeter, which I assume is what Smith is telling them to do.

Doesn't even resemble the team from the first two games.  Just bizarre.

SkiBum80 - SkiBum80 - 11-12-2025

Their guy Miller is killing us

Announcer constantly mixing up Okorie with Okpara

Our bigs other than Okpara look, how can I put it, a work in progress

After Okorie ignites the offense
And our D drinks a case of Red Bulls
We take a slim lead

Jeesh, MTSt is 1-2 coming into this game.

SkiBum80 - SkiBum80 - 11-12-2025

Ridiculous to rely on freshman in 3rd game to lead us to victory
But that’s where we at

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7PM, ACCNX - JJJ - 11-12-2025

The Ok boyz need to take us home.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7PM, ACCNX - BostonCard - 11-12-2025

Well, we pull it out in the end.

We escaped at Maples.  We'll take every W we can get.

SkiBum80 - SkiBum80 - 11-12-2025

Agree we escaped
Our D finally showed up
And Gealer played well at the end
Overall I agree we continue to lean inordinately on the OK boyz

Pretty much the second I posted this they started looking great on offense.  Very nice finish.

On the upside
I do believe in the Haasian era we likely lose this game

In postgame interview w Benny Gealer,
Coach Montgomery, God bless him, tells Benny that after he graduates and doesn’t get drafted into NBA at least he’ll have his valuable Stanford degree
Benny shoulda said “it’s valuable?! Really?!”

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7PM, ACCNX - needle - 11-12-2025

Portland State ends up losing by 10, and trailed by only 7 with about a minute left in the game. There are quite a few "OK" teams in men's hoops, and I'd include Montana State in that group. As Stanford fans, we're all hoping the team ends up better than "OK." Only time will tell.

It's three games, three shows put on by Okorie but on this occasion it was BFG-05 who really saved our heinies.  We hit five 3's tonight and four of them were his.

Even if he didn't quite meet the demigod bar he set in the first two games Okorie has been quite the revelation: two weeks ago on barttorvik.com he was projected to have a PORPAGATU! of +0.4, and now he is at +6.2 which is fourth among all players in the ACC.

On the other hand, Ryan Agarwal has got to get untracked, with a PORPAGATU! of -1.8 which is in the bottom ten in the ACC.  Woof.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7PM, ACCNX - BostonCard - 11-13-2025

Dare I ask, WTF is a “PORPAGATU”?
