Princeton v. Princeton.
Final score prediction 30-24.
Why is there no drive-thru Starbucks open near campus post-game?

And what about the hot dog concession stand that had been closed last game?

No chalk talk tonight, I guess. I got to Kissick a bit late, 6:30, and the doors were all locked. Though come to think of it, the Season Ticket Member Event sign was out, so maybe I just missed it.

Pronounced scoring deficiency.
We lead 15-8 after 10 minutes. All the freshmen are getting court time. Somfai and Ogden are the standouts so far.
UCD shot a dismal 2-14 in quarter one, including 0-8 from 3.

35-19 at the half.
Somfai with 12 pts and 7 rebounds in 16 minutes.

Swain is having an uncharacteristic poor game.
Somfai and Agara just one rebound from a double-double.
We've been stuck on 48 for a long time.
Somfai with a double-double.
Agara is just solid.

That means we are double rebounds from a double double-double.

70-45 final score. Defense continues to shine against overmatched opponents.
Agara with 16 points and 16 rebounds; Somfai with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Only 11 assists on 24 field goals. I feel like that could be better.

Solid start-to-finish win. A few thoughts:
Agara and Somfai were both really solid, do-everything posts. I'd love to see us run more high low action because Somfai had one brilliant pass to Agara and I suspect both are capable of running that if we prioritized it.
I wonder what is going on with Swain. She has great, physical movement, great instincts, and is very effective at getting TO the basket. But it's like she's wearing oven mitts once she gets there: she has almost no touch around the rim, or she fumbles it, or she goes up for a very telegraphed shot that gets easily blocked. At this point, I'm almost expecting her to throw it up, not score, and lose possession. I'm not sure if it's a confidence thing, or what, but it's weird because she is doing everything well except actually finishing. Each of the last three games I've been waiting for her to "break through," and it's still not happened. I hope it will, because she has many Wiggins-like aspects to her game, except that from day one, Wiggins was, as they say, "a bucket."
I can see why Eschmeyer is the fourth big off the bench: she does not do well handling switching on defense and she can get a little panicked in traffic. I think it's just a case of a freshman needing to "slow the game down," and I think she'll get there. The good news is she has excellent touch and great vision, so it's really just about building up confidence, experience, and ball handling.
I'm not sure the last time Stanford had a player as naturally charismatic and likeable as Somfai. Maybe Brink? She just practically radiates, on and off court. Her post-game interview was utterly charming. We're only 6 games in, but she already comports herself like the very best of what Stanford stands for. I'm really excited for four seasons of this. =)

I think Wiggins was the most charismatic and likable player we've had. Every time she was on the floor, it looked like she was doing what she loved, and it was so much fun to see.

I think this game exemplifies the identity of this team. Strong straight up defense and dominant rebounding (56 to 25!). Remains to be seen if we can play this way against better teams but I like this direction more than what we saw last year. And defense and rebounding has won South Carolina a few national championships recently.

Massey has us rated 19th in the country; our offensive rating is 30th, while our defense is rated 19th.
Caveats abound about small sample sizes and overmatched opponents.

It's obvious by now that Kate will not be changing the offense anytime soon, so we should look for bright spots and last night there were a few. I don't know what happened to Somfai in the Gonzaga game, but she looks like a controlled 'freight train' driving the ball and scoring from the high post and other spots on the perimeter or stepping out for baseline jumpers and 3-pointers, which she made a few. Of our 3 touted freshmen, Lara has become an immediate impact player for the Cardinal and potential double-double machine, along with Agara. One concern; Lara is still prone to fouling and she needs to clean that part of her game up as the season moves forward.
What I'm noticing about Nunu this season is she's letting the game come to her, rather than forcing things. With only one field goal and a couple of free-throws at the end of the first half, Agara went to work in the 3rd. quarter, imposing herself against UC Davis and their 6'4 post, especially on the offenive boards. She will continue to up her game come Conference, but at 6'2, she will give up size and length to a number of ACC opponents and hopefully a more developed Eschmeyer and/or Umeh will allow Nunu to move to power forward.
Not sure what to make of Ogden. In the first few minutes of the game she made two great slashing moves to the basket, pulling up twice for jumpers that swished through the net and I thought 'OMG! Those are Lexie Hull moves, but after another field goal in the second quarter, Ogden was silent. Ogden looked great against Gonzaga and pretty good against Cal Poly, but in other games, she has been a non factor. If Courtney can give us more offensive consistency, she becomes a third threat that other teams must worry about.
Agree about Swain. I'm wondering if she's having trouble adapting to Kate's offense, which is quite structured.
As suspected, Kate played Eschmeyer more minutes (15:47), actually more minutes than MAS (11:34) and while she does need more work, she looked at lot more confident out there than in previous games. I especially liked her drive to the basked from the high post for an easy layup she barely missed, but grabbed the rebound and got the put-back. I don't mind the 2 3pointers she took (and missed), because she didn't hesitate and her form looked good. There was a moment in the 2nd. quarter when Kate was playing: Agara, Somfai and Eschmeyer all at the same time. Yes, defense has to improve, but I still believe that those three on the front line will eventually be one of Stanford's keys to success.

I think our next two opponents: Lehigh and FGCU won't provide much more insight. FGCU has taken a step back since Smesko left to coach the Dream.
Our second Thanksgiving weekend foe: Colorado State beat Gonzaga by 4 recently so they might be a better indication but the first game I'm really circling is the Dec. 3rd matchup against Tennessee. That will be the first of a tougher stretch in the month heading into conference play, to show how ready our freshmen are for top-line collegiate play and where we are as a team.
We've beaten the teams that we needed to beat, can we beat or at least be competitive with the ones who are more in the national conversation of good squads?

Ogden has embraced her role as the glue player. Strong defense and taking the open shots that are there but not necessarily the primary option on offense. And I think Ogden is our best perimeter defender. Quick enough to stay with most guards and long enough to alter shots. And unlike last year she’s cut down on the fouls. When we play Notre Dame, I could see Ogden being the primary defender on Hidalgo.

Agree, Ogden is a good defender, but if you happened to watch Notre Dame squeak out a win against visiting USC yesterday, Hidalgo destroyed 6'1 guard/wing Kennedy Smith, considered one of the best defensive players in the country. No one on the USC team could stop her. Defensively, Hidalgo stole the ball multiple times- against Smith, Jazzy Davidson, and others. In an earlier game she had 16 steals along with 44 points. When Stanford plays Notre Dame, the only way to slow her down is: 1) have Somfai (and not Lepolo) bring the ball upcourt and 2) double team her when she crosses midcourt with the ball, forcing her to pass. One plus for the Cardinal, Notre Dame is somewhat vulnerable inside.
