Don't laugh. Some on the Kal board think it could be a good idea. Fortunately (for Kal), these advocates didn't seem to generate a groundswell of support for that idea :-).

I would think that Tim Plough, UC Davis HC, is a strong possibility.

I wonder if he would have been fired if Cal had won Big Game?

No they would have waited until after they lose to SMU.

He was doomed after the embarrassment in San Diego in September.

The timing might have been bumped up a week but he was going to be fired no later than next Sunday.

This is going to be interesting with both Stanford and Cal unveiling new coaches in the next couple weeks.

Who will get it the right guy?  Or if both get the right guy.  Which one will be “more right”?

Verified here.

Can Kal really do much better on a regular basis? I mean it’s good to aspire, but low level Bowls half of the time seems like a reasonable expectation. And I am not saying that as a Cardinal ripping on Kal; I am more comparing Kal to where UCLA is at and can Kal really expect to be consistently much better. Heck we are slightly excited to get to 4 wins for a change this year

Another former Pac-12 head coach lost his job today. Chip Kelly is out as OC with Raiders after dismal offense against 2-8 Browns. Browns are another team with a bad offense, but they have a decent defense which recorded 10 sacks of Geno Smith. Shadeur Sanders made his debut start in the NFL vs the Raiders.

Well, Rivera said the expectation is 8/9 wins a season.  Like you, I think that is rather ambitious but I guess the adage, “shoot for the moon, and if you miss, you’ll land among the stars” applies in this case.

I get aspiring, but Kal certainly risks face planting instead. Their choice and they will have to live with the results either way. It was clearly different for us with Shaw - we were already a 3-9 team after many years of sliding - and Taylor obviously had to go after the abuse allegations. Kal clearly made a choice here in comparison.

I get Cal's frustration, 9 years, losing overall record, but worse, a really bad conference record.
But yeah just making a change to head coach because "we aren't winning enough" isn't really a plan going forward, it's more of a reaction.

Didn't someone in the past post a list of the coaches who had been fired the week after losing to us?  The shame of being defeated by Nerd Nation pushes many programs over the edge causing the masses to demand a human sacrifice.

Cheers,
Pete F.

I would have bet Mike Norvell would make that list.  He was Dead Man Walking in October.  But I guess that buyout kept him alive for another season.

Yeah I was just thinking, how do we compare the other programs on the number of times this has happened?

Certainly look forward to a day where losing to Stanford isn't a a fireable offense.

Good for Cal not accepting a mediocrity at the helm.

No AD or GM will say 'well, we don't think we can do better than 7 wins a year, so we're happy with status quo,' Luck doesn't say that.  Dave Braine, formerly of VT and GT once said Tech was a 7-win team with occasional 10 win seasons. He was dead right, of course, but that got him ridden out of town. Can't have that be your aspiration.

It will be interesting to see who Cal and Stanford can hire with face of program GMs in charge. Widely circulated picture of Luck with his hands on a player's facemask during the game doing some disciplining. That doesn't happen in professional sports, which is what this is now. Might limit the quality of coach because they are subordinate to the GM.

I saw what preceded that interaction.  That player, on the sideline, was pushing past his teammates towards a weenie player to amplify an altercation.  Luck stepped into his path and grabbed his facemask to stop his progress and impart some of his deep wisdom about sportmanship.  Good for Andrew.

Wasn’t that as they were headed to locker rooms at the half?
