Yip in the Desert? - unclechuck - 12-14-2011

ASU has reportedly hired Pitt's Todd Graham as their new HC.

This may be a band-aid fix for ASU as Graham is characterized as a defensive specialist so one might guess the SunDevils will make a hard charge to retain OC Mazzone who's done a great job there, is beloved by Ostweiler, and is reportedly being courted by UCLA and TAMU.

Graham had a nice record @ Tulsa but that was with WVA's Holgorson as his OC. He certainly didn't light the world up @ Pitt in his 1st year.

Will be interesting to see what Mazzone does. He's stated his desire to stay @ ASU, & recently purchased a home there. If he chooses to move on, what will that say about his view of Graham? And even if he stays, will ASU be more than .500 for the next couple of years?

Any folks familiar with Tulsa or Pitt programs willing to weigh in?

Mazzone to UCLA: http://twitter.com/#!/BFeldmanCBS/status/147034516853239808

Gotta say, despite initial skepticism Mora the Younger seems to be doing a good job assembling a staff.

So, Graham was an unliked HC at Pittsburgh and was a coordinator at Tulsa. It sounds like they've hired Walt Teevens!

Bingo WIM. Graham's job just got more challenging. He's going to have a tough locker room to win over.

Ditto Mora's run of assistant hirings, now including Mazzone who will be great for returning QBs Breheurt & Huntley. Bruins still have a nice bit of young talent from their boffo 2010 recruiting class. If they close well this year they could be daunting by mid/late 2012.

In a way good to see UCLA get healthy now so they keep SC somewhat in check during their scolly probation years. If SC is able to optimize their 15 rides with the elite of LA, they may be able to get by their sanctions much better than most have imagined.

I may take a look at this next week when I have more time, but it's my strong suspicion that bad UCLA is good for us on the recruiting front. I don't think it's entirely an accident that some very talented (but ultimately underachieving) Bruins teams existed at the same time as some of the worst Cardinal teams ever.
