Wow - that is wild and messed up.

What a roller coaster week for their athletics dept - it started with receipt of a $390M (!!!) donation. The donor's total gift to UM was $401M (balance to their biz school), UM's largest single private gift ever.

Priorities...$11 mms. for business, $390 mms. for athletics.

I've noticed none of the skunkbears in my life brag about that natty because they know it is the fruit of a poisoned tree.  Inadmissible in the court of public opinion.

Classic observation and sadly very true.

Um, wrong school. The $401M donation was to Michigan State (Sparty), not UofM

some of the $11m for the bus school, Sparty might be looking to update his costume.....maybe some new band uniforms and instruments, maybe a new marching band practice field (why not an enclosed one), maybe the band needs a new strength and conditioning coach.....

Quote:while the remaining $11 million will be invested in the MSU Burgess Institute, Broad College of Business, marching band and mascot program

Maybe San Jose State has some old leftover uniforms and instruments that they can send to Michigan State...

some more on the use of the funds

Quote:"Most of the donation, $390 million, is directed to MSU athletics, making it one of the largest single commitments in college athletics history, according to MSU.

The couple donated $290 million toward the university's FOR SPARTA: The Capital Initiative for MSU Athletics, a $1 billion fundraising campaign, and another $100 million will be earmarked for Spartan Ventures. Spartan Ventures is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization formed by MSU that will be the revenue and development arm of MSU Athletics in the Name, Image and Likeness era of college athletics."

I wonder how $11 mil to our marching band and mascot might be spent? Refreshments/Libations/Medicinal supplements for the band? UFC training for the Tree?

Inappropriate relationship is just the tip of the iceberg. You can add home invasion (third degree), assault, stalking, breaking & entering, mental health issues.

That doesn't even include the one-game suspension at the start of 2026 for the signal stealing or the 2023 one-game suspension for violating COVID recruiting rules.

Warde Manuel, AD, still retains his job.

After being fired for cause, he loses the $6.1 annual salary, the $500k retention bonus and the $14 mms. buyout.

Question for the medical experts here:
Does the Sherrone Moore situation have hallmarks of CTE? Moore played offensive guard in college.

Wouldn't surprise me, honestly.

RE: Michigan - dabigv13 - 12-12-2025

Impossible to say IMHO. Plenty of people without a history of playing college football or head trauma ruin their lives and lose their jobs over workplace infidelity. That CEO and his HR director at the coldplay concert spring to mind.

The intense publicity of being the Michigan football coach, and multiple millions of dollars at stake, is a distinguishing factor, and maybe could drive some of the more bizarre parts of the story, like the threats/self harm with the butter knives bit, but CTE could be a factor too.

RE: Michigan - norcard10 - 12-12-2025

At least we know Tavita is safe from poaching as UM begins their search.

RE: Michigan - BostonCard - 12-12-2025

The diagnosis requires a microscopic examination at autopsy, so even seeing a patient by an expert can only offer a suspected diagnosis.  For a non-expert to try to diagnose someone via news reports would be irresponsible.

The AD Warde Manuel should be fired. But the University has an interim president so cleaning house in the Athletic Department may wait until a new, permanent president is hired.

RE: Michigan - HalloHaleakala - 12-13-2025

It's unfortunate that Michigan's the epicenter of all these coaching scandals/controversies. We'd expect this at lesser places like U[sic]SC, but not at what, by and large, is one of the true gold standards in academia as well as in collegiate athletics.

They'd better get their house in order and quick, because this is a terrible look for them (and arguably the NCAA as a whole) all the way 'round.
