SF Giants 2026 - Mick - 12-16-2025

The Giants have two strong Stanford alums who should make an impact on their pitching staff in 2026 in Erik Miller and Tristan Beck. Hopefully  both return strong from injury. The Giants are light on lefties, and Miller was particularly effective at full strength. In six ABs vs. Ohtani, he struck him out five times and gave up an infield hit.

Insider Ken Rosenthal says the Giants don't get it, and their lack of off-season moves prove it.

He certainly doesn't like the fact that the Giants aren't pursuing top level players, not in any serious fashion.

He still thinks the Giants will land Scherzer, given Scherzer's relationship with Vitello. Lots of rumors, no movement. They check in on Schwerber, Marte, Tucker, Bellinger, etc. but they won't get any of them. They spent big on Adames, Devers, Lee and Chapman, and I don't see them spending big  on any other position players. They've been bitten by bad pitching contracts (too many to list).

I don't think we get either of the best 2nd basemen available, including Ketel Marte - who has the Giants as one of his five "no-trade teams" and I think we don't get Brendan Donovan from the Cardinals either. I think the Giants would rather hope that either Schmitt returns from injury, Fitzgerald returns to his 2024 form (NL Rookie of the Month, July 2024), or Christian Koss gets a little more power. Koss  stole  four bases in five tries, btw. Koss is actually the best fielder of the three, by a smidge over Fitz. They're both 27, Schmitt is 26. Schmitt has the least range of the three.

As for pitching...I think the Giants are out on every major pitcher. I think their general idea is to score 12-18 pitching arms (including at least one former pitcher) and hope six of them work out. I hope Miller and Beck come back strong.

Not a hopeful prognosis for those of us hoping for an improved 2026 season.  So ... another .500 season?  Or worse?

They started out 8-2, then 12-5, then 19-10 on April 27. They were in the divisional lead for two days in late April after two consecutive walkoffs, including six w/os in the first 29 games.

Then they lost three straight. Lost 12 of 14 in July. Lost 11 of 13 in August. They went 32-32 in one-run games.

I suspect management like Buster Posey watched good players have early wins. I think they thought they had a good team, borderline a great team, that was strong up the middle. I think sr. management thinks we do a lot of little things wrong. Stupid cutoff throws (or missing cutoffs), lack of focus, poor plate discipline.

I think they think the team needs shaking up, and that Bochy/BoMel or someone similar can't do that. Vitello is a big change. Not saying he'll be like Augie Garrido...

augie

But he might be like Tommy LaSorda...who is only three years older on this video than Vitello is today...

Tommy Lasorda and Doug Rau's mound visit from the 1977 World Series (NSFW Language)

Or Frank Robinson...who figures out an opposing pitcher is doctoring the ball...

Former Stanford star and current Chicago Cubs 2B might be a target for SF Giants, who want a stronger second baseman than Schmitt.
What it will take for SF Giants to land coveted Cubs 2B Nico Hoerner
