MBB: Stanford 69 -- VaTech 68 - skip75 - 01-07-2026

Stanford is in Virginia on the first of four cross-country ACC road trips - first stop Blacksburg. The Hokies are favored by 5.5 and the over/under is 144.5, making the implied score 75-69.5. VaTech is 12-3, 9-0 at home. They opened ACC play with a triple OT win over UVa, then lost to Wake Forest. Their other two losses were in the Bahamas at Thanksgiving vs. St. Mary's and Va. Commonwealth.  So they are 1-3 in Quad 1 games along with 3-0, 2-0, & 6-0 in Quad 2,3, & 4 games.

They have three starters that have each missed several games. Two are still out - 7-foot freshman Antonio Dorn (out since December 14 with a back injury) and defensive stopper Tyler Johnson (out since December 20 with a foot injury). But Tobi Lawal (#1 6'8/215 Sr F) is expected back from a foot injury that has kept him out since November 26.

Lawal leads the team with 10.3 rebounds/game and scores 12.8 ppg. He is one of only four players returning from last years' team that lost 70-59 at Maples. He started that game (along with Johnson & Jaden Schutt) and scored 15 points. The roster includes 7 freshmen and 3 transfers.

Starters in their last game were:
#13 Amani Hansberry (6'8/240 Jr F) Transfer from WVa leads the team with 16.5ppg and pulls down 9.0 rpg. Averages more than 3 fouls/game, has 2 technical fouls, and has fouled out four times.
#17 Neoklis Avdalas (6'9/215 Fr G) Two-year pro from Greece's top tier league. Received one vote for ACC pre-season Rookie of the Year. Leads team with 5.1 apg and scores 14.3 ppg.
#0 Jailen Bedford (6'4/190 Gr G) At his 4th school - 2 yrs JC/ORU/UNLV. Scores 9.3 ppg.
#32 Christian Gurdak (6'10/260 Fr C)
#2 Jaden Schutt (6'3/200 RJr G) Led team last year in minutes and 3s. Scoring 10.0ppg and again leads team in 3s (39 on 42%shooting).

Ben Hammond (#3 5'11/170 So G) comes off the bench to score 11.7ppg.

I'm hoping Oskar gets another start - I think he earned it despite an unimpressive stat line. I'd like to see him match up with Gurdak, another freshman, after having to square off with Louisville's 4-year veteran of the German pro league.

Getting a win tonight would sure be nice before the the buzz saw of three upcoming games vs. Top 25 opponents.

Not a great first half.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - skip75 - 01-07-2026

Down 31-24 at the half. Difference in the game is VaTech 5-13 from 3, while Stanford is 2-13. Both teams playing some good defense (Stanford with 4 steals & 3 blocks), but both also struggling at times with their shooting.

Giltay with 6 pts & 10 rebounds - and 2 blocks.

Lawal is back for VaTech - played 9 minutes. Avdalas is tough to deal - good length for a guard that can handle the ball and shoot. Boeheim comparing him to Luka Doncic.

VaTech doing a good job on Ebuka - need to get him & Chisom going more on offense. And need some rebounding from more than just Oskar - es[ecially keeping VaTech off the O boards.

Spacing about as bad tonight as it was against ND, so we can't score inside.  Outside shooting is bad too.

We'll be lucky to get to 45 points.

Heh... happy to be wrong on the 45 points.

Okorie in takeover mode.  Will it be enough?

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - SkiBum80 - 01-07-2026

So far this game is meeting the general expectation:  ACC road games are gonna be tough

Also seems like the refs have called this game really tight for the most part.
Calling fouls on plays that otherwise might be let go, play on.

Okorie seems the most "foul wise" guy on our team.
As far as knowing how to get fouled, and not being called himself for many.
Some of our guys are kinda notso wise in this area.

The Okorie Show forces Tech to take a time out!

Okorie (sp) 4 3!

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - SkiBum80 - 01-07-2026

Announcers just said it's been a 17-3 run for the Card.
Now 3.3 seconds left

We Won!  I think?!?!  Who can tell?!?!
Refs having a latte to think it over

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - BostonCard - 01-07-2026

We were down 65-52 with 3:18 to go in the game, and we outscored the Hokies 17-3 down the stretch.

Okorie scored or assisted on 40 of the last 42 Stanford points.

It's like Okorie broke into Fort Knox and ran out laughing pushing a wheelbarrow full of gold bullion!

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - BostonCard - 01-07-2026

ESPN gave Va Tech a 99.4% chance of winning at the 3:18 mark.  Yeah, 0.6% probabilities happen in about one out of every 167 games.

Amazing win. A miracle. 31 points and 6 assists for Okorie.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - SkiBum80 - 01-07-2026

I was gonna add that the Okorie Show needs some supporting cast members to step up more.
But Giltay with 13 boards is nothing to sneeze at.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - Spiny_Norman - 01-07-2026

Stanford scored on every possession in the last 3 minutes.

2:35 Gealer 3 pointer (Okorie assist)
2:09 Okorie driving layup plus FT
1:40 Okorie driving layup
1:08 Okorie 3 pointer (Grant assist)
0:28 Young 3 pointer (Okorie assist)
0:03 Okorie 3 pointer

Okorie had 26 points in the 2nd half!!

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - Langdude - 01-07-2026

I was an undergrad in the Brevin Knight era. Okorie reminds me of him in a lot of ways. Brevin was a better defender (probably the best in Stanford history), ballhandler, and passer, but Okorie is a better scorer, and better from distance. But they both have that swagger as true freshmen.

Mudhead - Mudhead - 01-07-2026

I watched it live on TV. I watched a partial replay. I still don’t believe it. I’m old enough to have been at the Stanford win over Rhode Island that got us into the final four. Other than that , this is the best comeback and win I’ve ever seen from a Stanford team.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Virginia Tech, 4PM, ACCN - BostonCard - 01-07-2026

Fun fact, Stanford is the only ACC men's basketball team with zero away or neutral court losses.

At the 5:20 mark when Okorie hit 20pts, the announcers said that Stanford was 9-0 in games he reached 20.  Looked like a tough task down 6 at that time.  Looked even worse after a 7-0 VT run.  But wow, what an exciting finish.
