If you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying (Olympics edition) - BostonCard - 02-06-2026

I did not have this NSFW cheating scandal in ski jumping on my 2026 bingo card.

Anyone who predicted this … well, nobody did. Unbelievable.

This is just the logical "outgrowth" of the recent Norwegian ski jumping team's scandal which also involved manipulating the crotch size to improve aerodynamics.

I guess I could have been a good ski jumper.

And a bad pole vaulter.

But it wouldn’t help you ski jumping unless you are counting on a lot of… uh… shrinkage.  As I understand the scandal, it’s not the size of the member that gives an advantage, but rather that if it is made larger when the suit is measured, then when it reverts to its original size during a jump there’s extra material, which acts to keep the jumper aloft longer.

It's pretty amusing, and I suppose plausible, but important to remember no specific competitor has been accused of this.

Well, the Norwegians did get caught altering the suits.

That scandal gave rise to speculation about other ways to cheat, and the German paper Bild published a report claiming “discovered insider talk of the practice being used to alter athletes' ski jump suit measurement point” though skiing’s governing body has dismissed it as a wild rumor.  It is fair to say that right now it is all based on hearsay, and as you point out, no specific competitor has been accused of doing it.

more drama in ski jumping.....you'd think someone on the team would measure the boots and skis to make sure they complied with the rules.....

Quote:"Austrian ski jumper Daniel Tschofenig said he felt "extremely stupid" after being disqualified from the men's large hill individual event for wearing oversized boots.
...
The 2025 World Cup champion was found to be wearing boots that were four millimetres larger than the rules permitted.
...
On Sunday, USA ski jumper Annika Belshaw was disqualified from the women's large hill individual event because her skis were more than one centimetre too long."
