Ray Handley passed away at 81 years of age.

His death was announced in a post on LinkedIn by a nephew, Robert Handley, who did not state the cause or place of death.

I did not know that Ray Handley played at Stanford, although he was an assistant coach during my time there. Looks like he played varsity in the early Ralston years, 1963-65. Scored the winning TD versus Notre Dame in 1963. Led the team in rushing the last two years. Was an assistant coach for a number of years for the Indians/Cardinals/Cardinal after that.

Too bad things blew up in such an ugly way with the NY Giants.

Love this quote from Giants RB Ottis Anderson about why Handley failed as coach:

“His philosophy was totally different from Bill’s [Parcells], and I think we took advantage of it. Bill was very stern and aggressive. Ray believed, ‘You guys are men. You make good money. I don’t need to punish you like you are kids.’ I think that’s mainly where he went wrong. We need to be treated like kids.”
