MBB: Stanford 86 -- Notre Dame 78 - skip75 - 03-04-2026

Can Stanford ride the wave of the home sweep, the Senior Night celebration, and the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor for Benny Gealer (https://gostanford.com/news/2026/03/3/gealer-named-acc-scholar-athlete-of-the-year) to spoil Senior Night at Notre Dame?

Here is the thread from that ugly loss to UND back in December - https://thecardboard.org/board/thread-25965.html. The first post is more of an ACC season preview - go to the 2nd post for the game preview.

Notre Dame is 13-16, 4-12 in the ACC, 10-6 at home. Last week, they suffered their worst home loss since 1898, 100-56 vs. Duke. But they bounced back with an impressive 96-90 OT win vs. NC State. They are tied with Pitt for the 15th (and last) spot in the ACC tourney and Pitt has the tie-breaker advantage. So the F'ing Irish will truly be fighting in this game and in their finale at BC to extend their season

Stanford is favored by 1.5, over/under is 146.5, implied score is 74-72.5.

Notre Dame is dead last in the ACC in turnover margin, assist/TO ratio, steals, and blocks. They are near the bottom in assists, scoring, & scoring margin. Their most favorable team stats are rebound margin (#7), 3s % (#6), & opponents 3s % (#8). In that forgettable 47-40 loss in December, the Irish dominated the boards 48 (16 off/32 def) to 38 (10/28). They led 12-4 in 2nd chance points & 30-18 in points in the paint  - and that was when Okpara was still playing. Stanford will need Rohosy, Cammann, & Giltay to have more of a presence at both ends of the court. Notre Dame was just 3-16 from 3, but held Stanford to 4-30. Stanford led 11-4 in points off TOs & 9-2 in fast break points. But Okorie had his worst game with 7 points on 3-14 shooting.

Updates on Notre Dame players:

Shrewsberry, Towt, and Certa seem to be certain starters. Shrewsberry scores 11.8ppg, is #3 in the ACC with 2.8 3s/game, #4 with 40.3% on 3s, & #9 with 32.5 minutes/game. Towt is #4 with 9.3 rebounds/game. He shoots 61.1% on FGs, but just 32.1% from the line. Certa leads the ACC with 90.2% FT shooting (83-92). He averages 12.8ppg, but in February, he is scoring 20.1ppg, with 4.3 3s/game.

Haralson sprained an ankle on Feb. 10 and returned to action in the NC State game. He came off the bench to score 25 points and get 9 rebounds. I presume he will be back in the starting line-up tonight.

Mohammed and Sundra will likely see some time, but not start. Njie suffered a knee injury and is out for the season.

Three players not mentioned in my December preview will probably see action. Logan Imes (#2 6'4/205 Jr G) actually started vs. Stanford (my preview was obviously not very good) and in 8 other games. Brady Koehler (#6 6'10/205 Fr F) started vs. NC State and 10 other games. He is #24 in the ACC with 0.7 blocks/game and can shoot 3s (39.1%). Ryder Frost (#7 6'7/215 Fr F) is another young guy who shoots 39.2% from 3.

Without looking into all the match-ups and tie-breakers, it looks like Stanford could still finish anywhere from 8th to 14th in the ACC. But it seems most likely that they are destined to fall short of the 9th spot, missing out on the opportunity for a first-round bye in the ACC tourney. But a win tonight would sure be a bit of revenge for that December debacle. And I did see Stanford listed as a potential #1 seed in the NIT - https://www.dratings.com/predictor/bracketology/. Hey, if you're going to be in it, you might as well get a good seed.

Another winner preview Skip!
I'm skeptical as to a good reason for being favored.
Even for an erratic and rollercoaster team like Notre Dame, they still fit the mold of winning more so than not, when at home.
It remains a fundamental expectation in my mind, that road ACC games are hard. Harder than might appear on paper.
That being said, if Okorie has a magical game, like has done often this season, and our supporting cast, especially our committee of bigs shows up to play, then yes could be a success.
Hoping for Coach and Team to be raring and ready to go, and find a way to win.

RIP Lou Holtz.  He was 89.  Not my cup of tea in a lot of ways. But overall, a guy that I think was a pretty good ambassador for college football.

I will only remember him for one thing and that is endorsing and making videos for virulent racist Jesse Helms in the 80s.

I know  nothing about that.

What I do know is that he coached college football for 33 years. During which time he undoubtedly had some influence over the lives of hundreds of young black men. And from what I’ve read about him – a positive influence.

If that’s wrong – then I will stand corrected.

Here's his Wikipedia entry, so folks can judge for themselves. Coach Holtz had his share of non-political controversies as well, but I agree that overall he was a great ambassador for college football, especially in his post-coaching days.

Thanks SkiBum! BTW, as a dog-lover & (mostly former) skier, I love your avatar.
I was also surprised to see Stanford favored. Notre Dame opened as a 1.5 point favorite. Don't know what might have flipped that - maybe some big money coming in from some bettors who watched Stanford for the first time on Saturday vs. SMU?
FWIW - the over/under is up to 148.5

Both teams playing pretty well half way thru the half
Or not well if you expecting a lock down defense

After first act of Ebuka show, Notre dame needs a time out

Re all our 3’s
As we saw in women’s game, live by the 3, risk dying by the 3
No whinging from me on this half!
But in 2nd half I’m hoping our D tightens a bit, and we get a few more shots inside the arc.

And maybe, just maybe, a little more equity in the foul calls.

Okorie getting doubled sometimes

I think JDS is 3 for 3 on 3’s
D Young having good game, one of his best?

RE: MBB: Notre Dame, 6pm, ESPNU - TonyLima - 03-04-2026

Now 15 free throws for ND, 2 for us. Sigh.

Also, could the announcers possibly be more in the tank for Notre Dame?
