Not a very encouraging start. Stanford is turning the ball over like crazy and Arizona is ahead 8-2.
SMH.
20-11 end of first quarter.
I guess nobody is following this game.
Let me tell you gang, you ain't missing much.

I am actually a little optimistic about this team. The talent level is clearly not what we are used to seeing in a Cardinal uniform. I was really impressed by Nora Ezike in the first half.
What I see in this first game is a team who isn't comfortable with the new offense yet and horrible on defense. I will give Paye some credit for swithcing up the offense. If She can recruit some good talent next year I think the Cardinal can achieve more.

In addition to 17 turnovers, just 4 assists. The epitome of passing the ball around a lot without a plan for what to do with it.

So wait until next year. Maybe.
Hey 9-0 run to start the second half. We are only down by 2.

So 29 turnovers isn’t a typo? Oh boy. And 2+ minutes left. Its practically impossible to win with 25+ let alone 30.

We lose 84-69. Anyone who can be positive about the upcoming season, well congrats.

Yes, 30 to's! 39 minutes for Shay, 38 for Hailee

We suffered through a stagnant and non relevant era of Haasian men's BB that was always characterized by losing the Assist/Turnover ratio.
It was a distinctive of the time and way of playing, that is something opposite of ball control.
Seems like we are now doubled down on that mistaken way of attempting to play in WBB.
Lest you think it is all about the players, Coach Smith took some of same players, and got new ones that were not notably rated much higher than prior rosters, and turned that ship around pretty quickly.

Clearly a bad game. I didn't get to see it, so I can only look at stats.
48% shooting percentage seems good.
6 of 9 players were 50% or better. Swain (61.5%), Ijiwoye (50%), Ezike (50%).
3PT% was poor (25%), so Stanford shot well (not counting fast break points, 13 of 25, 52%) when they had the ball inside the 3pt line. Without having seen the game, I wonder if the vilified passing around the perimeter must have led to good shots, at least when the there wasn't a TO. But the low number of assists suggests the passing wasn't how Stanford scored.
Half Stanford's turnovers were Arizona steals suggesting that the passing (or catching) wasn't crisp. But I can't tell if those were bad passes vs fumble fingers or stolen dribbles. My impression based on past performance is that it seems Stanford practices against slower players so passes that work in practice are stolen in games. It takes several games for them to mostly adjust.
14 fast break points seems good. Giving up 89 points indicates the defense wasn't solid. Too much overplaying?
Every player had turnovers (but also, 7 of 9 players had steals) 6 for Swain, 5 for De Vries, 4 for Eschmeyer, Ijiwoye, and Ezike. Bad ball handling? Poor passing?
If I look at +/- per minute on court, Sotelo did relatively the best (-3 for 30 minutes), followed by Ezike and Umeh. Interestingly, those players had the worst foul trouble. Tuhy did the worst.
(non-team) Rebounding: Stanford got 8 OR vs AZ's 17 DR: 8/25 =0.32
Arizona got 13 OR vs Stanford's 22 DR: 13/25 =0.52
So, Stanford was out rebounded significantly.

Barring a miracle and unexpected NCAA appearance, Paye will not be the coach next season. This was her make or break coaching season. It’s going to be a break.

I could not watch and frankly did not really want to. Poor coaching makes a team less than the sum of its parts and makes players look worse than they are. The box score says 8 assists and 30 turnovers. Ok, it is early and the team should improve, except that last season we saw the team regress late and in neither of the past two seasons did the team really improve a lot over the course of the season. Why should we expect a lot of improvement this season, and if we see improvement does that only mean from bad (hate to say it) to slightly less bad? UA is not expected to be good this season and they handled Stanford with ease. Is it NCAAs or bust or more like win 10 games all year or bust? I admire those who can be optimistic. I am not one of those people. Yucky start. Back to lurking.

I recorded this game, but frankly, after looking at the box score, I have no desire to watch it.
I wonder what sort of offense next year's coach will run...and who will be around to run it.

I'm trying to repress this game, but my recollection is that waaaay too many of the steals came while our players were dribbling. But, yes, there were a number of passes right to someone being double-teamed.

How the mighty have fallen. I tuned in, but it couldn't keep my attention. It wasn't just that the team lost; it was that they were sloppy. I think Arizona's an average team We allowed way too many turnovers. We shouldn't predict a season based on a single game, but if this continues, I'd like to see a change, especially if rumors about team chemistry are true.

Let me guess, we're a young team, they're a great, well coached team, and they punched first and we were playing behind the whole time?

Watched the game, very painful. Arizona is not a great team. I didn't renew my season tickets, but thought I might catch a few games at Maples. That's looking unlikely after today. Hate to say it, but I'm rooting for a record that says we need a new coach. Don't think I'll have to root much. Hope Swain sticks around.
