Quote:Hawks to deal Childress to Suns
The Phoenix Suns have agreed to a sign-and-trade with the Atlanta Hawks for Josh Childress(notes) and will give him a five-year, $34 million contract, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.
The Suns will send a 2012 second-round pick to the Hawks.
The Hawks still own Childress rights after he signed a three-year, $20 million deal with Olympiakos of Greece in 2008. Childress, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 11 points and shot over 50 percent in four seasons with the Hawks.
Washington, San Antonio and Utah also pursued Childress.
The Suns will also use part of the trade exception received from New York in the sign-and-trade for Amare Stoudemire(notes) to make the Childress deal work.
The Arizona Republic first reported the framework of the sign-and-trade.

a 2012 2nd round pick is not much compensation for Childress....

Those sign-and-trade deals are about maneuvering to avoid the salary cap rather than the actual value of the player. Â Cleveland only got 2 first-rounders and 2 seconds for Lebron James. Â I think he\'s worth a bit more than that.

I understand the cap space issue, particularly with the Hawks (I am a mile away from their home court), but still a 2nd round pick two years for a former lottery pick (and one with value). Â the current Hawks\' management has never been accused of being overly bright, but this is the best they could do?

My understanding -- someone please correct me if I\'m wrong -- is that the Hawks had very little leverage after they re-signed Joe Johnson to a max contract. Everyone knew they couldn\'t match what Childress would get on the open market. Therefore the sign-and-trade allowed them to get something, rather than nothing, which is what they would have gotten if Childress signed outright with another team and the Hawks failed to match.

97fan is exactly correct: the Hawks wanted to get something rather than nothing. The Hawks had particularly little leverage because Childress had already skipped out on them anyway (to Greece).
Cap space isn\'t really a consideration here, since Childress wasn\'t on their cap in the first place. So the Hawks get the picks and a trade exemption, which is always nice.

Robin Lopez and Josh Childress starting for the Suns would be nice to see. Â Also, Robin is expected to be named to the 2010 US world championships roster. Â Brook is already on the roster.

It\'s official; the Suns land Childress and Turkoglu. Â It\'s a one-pager, but it does sing Childress\'s praises.
