Phil Steele\'s overall projection can\'t happen: he has Ohio State in the National Championship game, so presumably he considers Ohio State the Big 10 champ. That means that the Rose Bowl will be forced to take a non-AQ team should one qualify--and it appears that\'s TCU (in Steele\'s projection.)

How about Stanford vs. Ohio State in the National Championship Game?

Anyone? . . . Anyone? . . . Bueller?

Rivals has Stanford at 33 in their preseason poll, and implies that Stanford could make a run for the Pac-10 championship if things go the right way.

Most online reports seem to say the difference between a great year and a decent year will come down to the performance of the RBs and DBs.  I have confidence that Luck and the OL will be good enough to make the RBs look OK.  It seems as though I am always worried about the lack of crazy quicks and overall depth of our DBs.

My hopes hinge on the play of the OL.  And really, what football team\'s hopes don\'t?

The OL is always important, but I think most in the media believe Stanford has a solid OL.  Last year the OL was amazing, and almost everyone returns.  So that area is not the wildcard for Stanford 2010.

Stanford can only get to 6-6 or better if the OL plays at a level close to 2009.

The question becomes will the non-Toby RBs or DBs step up?  If one group steps up then 7-5, 8-4 seem possible.  If both groups step up then it could be a very nice year.

My top three concerns:
1.) DL/Run defense--Ekom and Lorig are big losses, imo. Plus, there\'s a new system that may or may not maximize talent. Keiser will get his sacks, as will some others, no doubt.
2.) Lack of any kind of known commodity at backup QB
3.) OL pass blocking. It\'s no secret that Stanford will be a pass-first team this year. And see #2.

I agree with you on #s 2 & 3. However, we had Lorig for maybe 1/4 of last season and I think that contributed to a stunningly ineffective pass rush for us and, consequently, some terrible pass defense numbers ....for which the secondary received a little too much blame, I believe.

Not at all certain that Stanford will be a pass-first team this year. I think the run/pass ratio was about 60-40 last year. I look for about 55-45 this year. I do expect more passing to the RBs, however, especially with the excellent receiving skills of Stewart and Gaffney.

In the last 30 years Stanford has had back-to-back winning seasons twice - 92 and 93 (Green, Walsh II) and 95 and 96 (Tyrone\'s first two years).  Football success is hard to sustain.

So I am conditioned by 30 years as a fan to be concerned about the following:
Stopping the run
Stopping the pass
Running the ball
Passing the ball
Special teams
Turnovers
Penalties
Injuries
Coaching

Other than those areas, I have a lot of confidence in this team.

Re: Buy your Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl tix now - fullmetal - 07-20-2010

With an OL experienced at run-blocking, why not stick with the run and play-action?  50-50 seems okay to me.

Well, at least the two of you didn\'t mention academic ineligibility and athletes showing up on the police blotter.  We\'re safe from those, right?  Right?

Re: Buy your Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl tix now - washingtonismoney - 07-20-2010

You know a worry that I have--aside from meteor strikes and the supervolcano under Yellowstone erupting--about the Stanford team is the wideouts. I worry that Whalen and Owusu are fine wideouts if they\'re not the main option or can feed off of a dominant player\'s success, but not necessarily gamebreakers of their own accord. A variation of the Toby\'s gone worry, but usually the Toby\'s gone worry focuses strictly on the running game, which is a bit limited I think.

So goal line & and late game playcalling... - Redrum - 07-20-2010

is the one thing that doesn\'t concern Spiny.

Come on, you guys.  We\'re undefeated!  There\'s never a reason to fear.  We should be hyping the team and believing that we\'ll win the national championship every year!
