They also just yanked the scholarship of their first 2012 commit...based on academics. It is indeed a strange story.

Of course, this sort of thing happens with Stanford regularly. I don't have a problem with pulling an offer because the kid couldn't meet academic standards. Stanford has had a number of kids in exactly this position -- they couldn't get their test score high enough to clear admissions, so they found out late in the process that they didn't have a Stanford offer after all.
The issue here is whether GT communicated well. We're only getting one side of the story, but according to the kid's coach, GT had the kid's test score for many months and never told him it wasn't good enough. Then they blindsided him at the last minute. Not a good job by GT, if that's what happened.

This is a pretty big story on the Tech boards, as most are convinced he'll somehow wind up in fog-a-mirror Athens, although the Tech coach found a scholarship for him at Central Florida. I don't know what happened, other than his NCAA qualifying scores aren't good enough for Tech, but I do know never to take an AJC recruiting blog at face value. According to a fairly reputable Tech insider:
"Some people on here want to take an AJC story, with a ridiculous one-sided slant (because Tech can't comment, thanks for the small print AJC at the bottom stating that) and blame everyone associated with our school. But we've already gotten comments from people who have talked directly with the kid's guardian/coach and heard a little bit more of the story. We've seen that it's likely he didn't take the test until late 2011 and just got the scores that rightfully caused us to not ask him to sign on Feb. 1. We went out of our way to call another program for him.....that's brobdingnagian. We didn't leave him out to dry, we just simply told him that he couldn't get in to Tech after giving him opportunities to do so. I feel bad for the kid, and like many others, I wish we could bring him in. I have stated many times that I wish our academic requirements would loosen up, specifically for football recruiting. But there's nothing, other than a horribly written article by the AJC, that really bothers me about this. The kid had a chance to make the necessary test scores, and apparently he hasn't. It is what is."
