brobdingnagian pickup for Stanford and IMO he made the best choice. He'll have a chance to start day 1 at Stanford. Michigan starting time will be more limited.

was following the buildup in a chat room filled with Michigan folks...absolutely nuts. A few of them noted how few Stanford fans had been tweeting Garnett, tc, and felt, basically, that we had not shown him enough attention. I came out feeling the opposite: expectations in Ann Arbor were soooo high for this guy that if he did not seem a world beater/all american on day one, the pressure would have been tremendous. Nowhere to go but down, really. If someone doesn't already have Michigan ties, why WOULD you go there as a high ranking recruit?Â
Welcome to Stanford, Josh! Hit the books, ride your bike, get ready for medical school, and we'll all look for you on Saturday's in the Fall! I'm sure you'll be great...and sane

I was staying away from tweeting at any and all recruits due to the booster issues pointed out in the other sticky main thread. Not to say that I'm not enthusiastic about his commitment!

If we land Murphy and Peat, do we lose any of the 2nd tier OLine guys currently committed? We currently have 5 guys in the class on the OLine. These guys want to play, not sit behind blue chippers. Aside, I don't see how we can commit so many spots to one position in one class.
But if we do sign Murphy and/or Peat, Ted Miller makes a great point about the interest we'll get from elite QBs and RBs in next year's class. I think 2013 is going to be a really good year, with a second year starter at QB and the rest of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 class maturing. Not that I'm overlooking 2012, but the future sure looks bright.
The whole idea that team fans need to fawn over these guys before they're even verbal commits is mildly repugnant. Any recruit who's "looking for love" loses some points in my book. (man, I am turning into an ol' fart)

I doubt any commits will bail. Here's my reasoning:
1. Fanaika is going to take a mormon mission from what I understand, so he isn't going to be playing for a while.Â
2. Garnett, Murphy, and Peat are potentially physically ready to play as True Frosh.
3. Stanford regularly deploys 6 or 7 OL personnel packages.
4. David Shaw has made clear that if guys prove they can play, they will get an opportunity.
As for getting old about fans fawning over kids, and even celebrity in general. It isn't an age thing. It's a perspective and self respect thing that transcends age.

The only danger to supposed 2nd tier OL - Redrum - 01-26-2012
Is Montag. Feel bad for Fanaika and Caspers right now.

Colby Cyburt, who is now committed to UCLA, said the Stanford coaches told him that they wanted to finish with 5-6 OL recruits this year, though they might take an extra for the right guy. I'm guessing both Murphy and Peat would qualify. It seems like a lot of guys for one position, but then you think that there are 5 starters on the OL, injuries take a toll, some guys get homesick and leave (especially if you are recruiting nationally this is a danger), some might move to the DL if necessary; a lot can happen.Â
I'm not sure about strategies for recruiting, but if you think that each year you get about 20-25 spots available to play with (maybe a few less if you are giving out spots to walk ons), you could conceivably get a new person for almost every position on the field (22 starters); so about 5 seems right. And we have had a few years with fewer than that number, so we are making up some ground.
Some might want to change their committment, but I'm guessing we are ok overall. Also, Fanaika will probably take his mission and not be around for a couple of years (or be here one year, then go); that is, if he gets admitted, which I think has not happened yet as he was late submitting his app.
