Top Prospect: Â Andrew Luck - oski79 - 07-29-2010
I met a guy last week who is the head of scouting for an NFL team. Â Of course, we talked football almost the whole time. Â Two little nuggets stood out.
One, he and one of his scouts interviewed JaMarcus Russell before the draft and concluded he was only marginally smarter than a sack of donuts... Â (I paraphrase)
Two, that Andrew Luck, should he come out, is without any doubt next year\'s No. 1 draft pick.
So, where did the scout rank Kevin Riley? - Redrum - 07-29-2010
:)
Surely you did get around to that subject. Couldn\'t have been all Luck and JaMarcus Russell.
As an aside, it\'s really striking how down here in SEC country, LSU fans are shoving JaMarcus down the Memory Hole in the style of
1984.. Without a touch of irony (or self-awareness, come to think of it) they deride him for being such a bag of hammers. Of course, the drug busts and the financial problems would be enough to convince them of that, but there seems to be no awareness of what JaMarcus\' sojourn says about LSU, its academic standards and the fans who cheered him so. Â Turns out they knew he was a bum all along.

I asked him who the top prospects in the Pac Ten were. Â They love Luck. Â That turned got into an interesting discussion about Jake Locker vs Tim Tebow. Â He thinks Locker has a chance to become a solid NFL QB. Â Tebow he\'s not so sure about. Â He has a lot going for him--smart, competitive, incredible athlete, great leader--in other words, the kind of guy you want on your team. Â But the scouts aren\'t sure he can be turned into an NFL-quality passer. Â The scouts think his throwing motion is horrible.

What exactly is so bad about his throwing motion that they would ding him for that? Is it too flat and easily pick-able? Does it take too long to wind up? Is it a sidearm toss? You\'d think these things could be compensated for by smart decision-making and maybe a little bit of relearning...
Tebow is still unsigned.

Nice article by Peter King in SI that includes a description of the changes in Tebow\'s mechanics that the Denver coaches are making.

FM - the article describes one of Tebow\'s weaknesses - he would spin his torso as he released the ball. Â Led to erratic throws. Â A lack of control. Â They are drilling him over and over with a hand towel stuffed under his right arm to prevent that spinning motion. Â

This scout said much of the same, focusing on his long windup and body rotation. I said it seemed to me that someone who was that good an athlete should be able to adjust to a change, and he said you\'d be surprised at how hard it is. Under stress, he\'ll always tend to revert to the motion he\'s been using all his life.
PS Â He signed today. Â Five years, $11.25 mil, $8.something guaranteed. Â Not bad for a "project."

We\'ll see. Â I think the way training camp progresses should help him get his throwing motion down, especially if he focuses. Â If Tiger can retool his swing, Tebow can retool his delivery.
