November field issues revisited: natural grass vs. artificial turf - ChicagoCard - 02-08-2012

I read through the 3-page string of posts on this board about the turf issues Oregon, Big Game and ND game. But I am still wondering about this. Was Shaw known to have said he wanted something done about the field as in let's get a better grass field, or put in artificial turf? Seems a shame that the team across the Bay, with one of the great old-style stadiums in a beautiful setting, has gone with momentum turf (whatever that is).

I debated whether to post this because it's already been discussed, people have their opinions one way or another. Personally, I don't want a Stanford game looking like a home game in Madison, WI or Lincoln, NE. But I do wonder if Shaw's wishes can be read here and also what would be an expected timeline of implementation were that decision to be made? Come late spring, and nothing done, it can't happen until 2013?

I'm pretty sure Stanford won't install artificial turn in the near future.  We already dodged that bullet when the stadium and its expensive drainage system was funded.  If our big donors didn't want it then and were willing to pony up big bucks to head it off then I doubt two muddy fields (School near Oakland, Oregon) in November will change their minds.

Despite the grumbling I suspect we will see new grass seed variants and tarp systems applied but nothing more.

By the way, here's some of the grumbling (including Bowlsby and Shaw) ...

Turf was rejected and a new grass field is being installed.

Well the traditional bermuda grass turf probably cost Luck, and Stanford, a Voldemort trophy.  With a better turf, field turf, or whatever, the games in November would have been played at a higher level, and that would probably have been more than enough to get Luck the trophy.

It was probably really hard to the AD to look at that dormant grass and see anything other than a lost opportunity.  I forgot where it was noted, but Luck seemed to have no grand fondness for the old turf either.

Ironically, the new turf is not really needed in 2012 since Stanford will play very few games in November at home.

I think the Voldemort results had more to do with Baylor still playing in December while Stanford -- and Alabama -- were idle.
