WBB: Stanford 37 UW 24 (Half) -
Viking_Guy - 03-08-2012
Not a bad start, but not great.
Regina Rogers... man, will I be glad when she graduates. She's got some skills, but her offensive gameplan seems to consist of bludgeoning people out of the way with her size and shooting layups. In this game, literally, as she bloodied Nneka's nose with an elbow early in the first half. Nneka later drew Rogers' second foul by getting tight to her shoulder and drawing the charge when Regina tried the same move (also staying out of the way of the flying left elbow that led the shot).
Some nice run for Amber, especially with some quick hands generating steals against UW's guards. But again, the three-point shooting has wandered away; 1-7 from the field, the lone strike being a BonnieBomb late in the first half. Inside the arc? How about 14-20, for a nice 70% from the field?
Defense has been great. UW 8-31 from the field, and almost all of their shots have been either Rogers or Rogers-created (kick from the double-team, nice bounce feed to a cutter out of the double in the post). The only troubling thing was they got 7 offensive rebounds, including one key sequence where Stanford was only up 5 and two consecutive offensive boards led to the Rogers feed to the cutter to cut it to 3. Of course, then Stanford went on a 15-5 run to close the half, but still, they were getting outshustled for a while there in the middle of the half. And it would be a lot closer if UW could hit FTs (6-12).
And of course, the arena is pretty much empty. Not a lot of energy there.

I will also be happy to never see Regina Rogers again. She backed both Sarah and Jos down as though they weighed 95 pounds each. Hard to believe that Nneka didn't get squashed.
Bonnie got hot. When she was forced to chuck one up from way out as the shot clock expired Roz said, "If she had made that I was leaving."Â
Lindy hit a couple of 3's also, and the pack it in and let them shoot perimeter shots strategy no longer worked. I give their coach some credit, as he tried different zones, player, and trap defenses, but in the end it was too little against too much.
Just a good solid win and move on game.

Bonnie's stroke is, um, unorthodox? But I finally got to see her shoot free throws, the ball barely settles in her hand, nothing but net. If the coach staff continues to tell her to let it fly, great. Lindy finally nailed a couple, same form and rotation as her many misses, so maybe she's dialing in. I was disappointed that Taylor passed up at least three attempted treys, viewly her percentage is best (early in the season, I think she was deferring her shots to the upperclasswomen).
Ros made a comment during the webcast about the differing maturation time of players. The deadliest Stanford 3-pt shooter since I've been watching is Krista Rappahahn, who sat on the bench until her breakout senior year. Lost in the controversial play when Candice was called for charging into Seimon Augustes is the disallowed shot Krista nailed from the deepest right corner. Five Cardinal can hoist decent attempts from afar; 1.5 get hot, the inside opens up.
Final very encouraging note: Booooothe seemed to move very spryly on her recovered foot.
Now, off to root for U$C to advance to the Pac-12's third bid.

I haven't watched the game (yet), so here are some thoughts/questions based on the stats.
I'm surprised our best players played as many minutes as they did.
Toni: 28, Chiney: 27, Nneka: 25, Jos 25, Lindy 24, Amber 23
As a group, that's down 15% from the last UW game, but still higher than I expected.
The stats look similar to the UW game at Maples, except in free throws. In this game, UW got 28 free throws on 18 Stanford fouls. That's 13 FTA more than our opponents normally get on 4 fouls more than average. It's just 1 short of our season high. Chiney had 4 fouls and the other starters had 2 each. That's a concern, esp. with limited minutes. Is it officiating? Rough play? Call the fouls on the winning team? More fouls committed against their interior players when they have the ball?
I guess the fact that the stats look similar, but our starters played 15% less is a good sign!
31% on 3 point shots is ok, but nothing to be proud of. It is just below our average.
Their 8 3point attempts is a season low (by 2) for our opponents. Is that because they were getting the ball inside, or were we guarding them on the outside, or what?
By the way, in our last two games, we've had 4 (today) and 3 "unforced turnovers" (which is our turnovers minus their steals), compared to our season average of 7. It seems were cutting down on the errant passes and other bad judgements (yes, their steals are often caused by us).

UW's game plan was to get it to Rogers and let her make a play. Stanford doubled every time. Rogers made some good passes leading to points in the paint or to fouls. Stanford, because of the doubling, was frequently out of position, which led to a slew of UW O-boards. That led to put backs or more fouls.
3 point shooting stat might be misleading. Stanford hit nothing early on. Bonnie changed that. Early on UW sagged off the permitter players and nobody made them pay. Later, the 3 point shooting broke the game open.

Also, lots of fouls on drives throughout the game. Typical end-of-the-season officiating: let a lot go in the post and on rebounding situations, but call tightly contact against cutters and drivers. Also worked for Stanford at points, when they called a lot of off-the-ball holds against the Huskies.
The interesting part was that at one point, Washington had been called for one foul in the second half and Stanford had been called for 6 or 7. And the level of physicality between the two teams was at least roughly equivalent.
Of course, not as interesting as the second game, where I saw our favorite MB on the court. And got the sinking feeling she's going to ref the early game tomorrow and the championship on Saturday. Sigh.

I cannot seem to find the youtube of the game--I can only find the current live feed. Is the game still available or was it only available live?
And in other Pac-12 news... -

Oh, and by the way, SC just got hammered by WSU. Way to fall off the bubble and on to your face. The Toejams biggest scoring threats, Corral, Gilbreath and Harberts? A combined 8-39 from the field.
It will be interesting to see if Michael Cooper's seat gets a bit warm. They have good talent, but never put it together. Yes, they have injury issues. But tonight was just pathetic.
I think Kal has a much easier game tomorrow than Stanford will. Although WSU will try to beat them up.

WSU certainly beat up SC, with impunity until 3/4 of the way through the game when the refs belatedly started calling things a little tighter. I can't put the SC loss on the refs, though. WSU was doing some other things better than SC -- running, and hitting 3's -- while SC was missing free throws. SC never found a way to adjust and deal with the physical play from WSU. I was expecting some kind of halftime adjustment from SC but didn't notice them doing anything different on offense.

To answer my own question, yesterday's games became available on the "livefeed" once the live games were over--in the form of access to a 10 hour youtube video.
Now that I've seen the game:
1. I'm encouraged that Taylor and Sarah Boothe played. It will clearly take them a little game time to get back their rhythm.Â
2. Nice to see Bonnie and Lindy hitting some threes and keeping that threat present.Â
3. Toni's assist/turnover ratio continues to be awesome. The more I see her, the more I think Amber is going to be a very great player someday, though she had a few turnovers today.
4. Nneka's jumper has one of the prettiest, highest arcs I've ever seen. Bonnie's has one of the flattest trajectories I've ever seen. Nice to see them both going in!

Much of the press focused on how we shut down Pac-12 frosh of the year Jazmine Davis, who went 2-18.Â

Quote:Davis, who said she cheered for Stanford and Cal growing up but wasn't recruited by either, credited the Cardinal for taking her out of her game.
"We all know Stanford is a top, top team," Davis said. "They really did force me into making hard plays, hard shots. I just couldn't make that hard shot."
I expected to see Toni on her, but when I looked at the tape I saw that Amber dogged her all the way down the court when Amber was in. Lindy defended her when Lindy was in. I could not exactly see what they were doing that was special. I wonder if more experienced eyes could tell....

81--
I think Davis was not used to the kind of support lurking behind the guards; she's used to being able to get loose in the lane, especially when Rogers isn't in and the primary focus of offense. Yesterday the bigs, most especially Jos, were there to close down driving lanes when Jazmine penetrated, and she doesn't seem to be a good enough passer out of the lane when she ran into them. Also, I don't think Rogers is mobile enough to really take advantage when our bigs have to shift to cover penetration.
One other factor: we were doubling big-to-big on Rogers, rather than dropping a perimeter player in. Opened up the driving lanes for cutters, but didn't leave as many gaps on the perimeter. UW's most successful "plays" not involving Rogers in the post seemed to be drives off the pick leading to opposite corner and other kinds of kick outs; as the perimeter defense collapsed to help, shooters opened up on the outside. For example: Lindy gets picked off at the wing, and her player starts to drive the lane. The opposite wing defender drops in toward the lane, opening up the short corner three.
Just a couple of thoughts,
VG
