USC pulls scholarship offer from 4 star CB Chris Hawkins - StannyBoy - 03-16-2012

I'm hearing Lane Kiffin pulled the scholarship offer he only gave to Chris Hawkins to keep him from Stanford. They wanted Hawkins to enroll early which he didn't want to do. Sounds pretty shady to offer a kid to keep him from another school. Typical Lane Kiffin move.

This speaks volumes about U.S.C.  I get the value of recruits enrolling early to the program (especially ones on punishment for breaking NCAA rules), but unless the kid really wants to forego his last semester of high school, who the hell is U.S.C. or any other school to tell a kid he can't?

Nobody deserves to have these kinds of power plays pulled on them until they are at least 18 years old.

Did U.S.C. really pull the offer? Or did the recruit indicate that he wasn't really all that into U.S.C., and Kiffin decided to save face by "pulling" an offer that he thought wasn't going to be accepted? Or did U.S.C. insiders just invent the "pulled offer" story because they didn't want U.S.C. to have the embarrassment of being turned down? I know nothing about the situation, I'm just wondering.

his final 2 schools were USC and Stanford, so one would think he's coming to Stanford.

Is it party of the U.SC Enron-esque scholarship accounting schemes to move around when different scholarships are hitting their sanctioned limits? It seems like they're doing an amazing job of gaming the system to smooth out the impact of the scholarship reductions. It will be a truly amazing feat if they get through the next 4 years as a consistent Pac12/national power. But they're still a bunch of sons of bitches.

Source for this?

If true, you'd have to imagine we'd be the favorites--he was planning on announcing for us last Saturday...

I was told it was on the USC Scout.com premium message board.

they didn't give him a straight up offer though - they said yes but only if you enroll early. Basically testing him to see if they could steal him from stanford without having him count against their spring class head count. Shady as hell.

Yeah, I'm going to have to go with "not particularly shady" (assuming it's true). Schools put all sorts of terms on scholarship offers, and USC needs players to enroll early. If Hawkins doesn't want to do it, there are plenty of fine schools across the nation that are willing to take him. What I don't get about this story is why SC feels it needs to have an answer now. There's, like, nine months between now and early enrollment. (Which is why, by the way, I don't think it's true. If someone's motives don't make sense, and the only source is a message board...I'm going to hang on a bit before believing any report.)

That said, Hawkins coming to Stanford would be a very nice pickup.

The whole story has a lot of gaps, but I am pretty sure it is easy to piece together.

The Dad loves SC, so when SC came a callin' he instantly concluded SC was in the picture for his son.
Son quickly went to learn more and decided to not verbal to other programs just yet.
SC has several NCAA restrictions they are working around, so I am sure they want/need their recruits to be willing to do odd things.
Telling the recruit all of this now makes sense for SC and the recruit.  If the recruit is not willling to play or does not love SC, then SC can move on.  If the recruit is on SC's short list then that really can't hurt the recruit's prospects elsewhere.

Good for Hawkins to see what SC was willing to do.  Good for SC to learn that Hawkins was unwilling to fit within SCs work around of the NCAA restrictions.  Good for Stanford that Hawkins and SC might not be the dream match.

This type of thing used to happen all of the time behind the scenes, but now it is tracked by all of the many sites.  Nothing really to see here, IMO.

Well, the IS one thing to see - Redrum - 03-16-2012

Actually,  three.
1) Grades
2)  Difficulty/challenge of the classes taken
3)  Test scores

We haven't seen any of them.  Maybe the staff has.  Maybe the challenge isn't to get him committed,  maybe it's to get him admitted.

unless it is a very unusual situation, our football staff would have CH's transcripts and initiated discussions on part 2 and 3.  CH is reporting a 3.7 gpa.

Based on this article, it sounds to me like the Dad was ready to push Stanford, but the son wanted to take a look at USC.  Of course, it's the Dad's quote to which I'm referring, so maybe it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Some interesting stuff though.  It sounds like Hawkins might open up his recruitment a bit wider now, even if USC has pulled his offer.  But given the situation of Jontrey Tillman last year, and of a number of other prospects over the years who struggled with admissions despite impressive GPAs, it probably makes sense to proceed with caution.

As long as Hawkins is with us on NSD, all is good.

Chris Hawkins deciding today between Stanford and USC - stan01 - 04-01-2012

He will announce at the end of the Nike camp today.  Multiple Twitter reports say that he and his family are sporting Stanford gear.  USC fans have been diligently commenting on every post that the family is pulling an April Fool's joke.

Always going to be a tough one to get once SC offered. Hawkins's father posts on USC forums all the time.

Re: the University of South Central pulls scholarship offer from 4 star CB Chris Hawkins - socalstanfan1 - 04-01-2012

Disappointing, to be sure, given how well Hawkins is performing and how close he was to choosing Stanford.  But, there are still 10 months until signing day and stranger things have happened than a 17-year old having a change of heart.  If he chooses to go through the admissions process for Stanford, there could still be a shot (though the father has gone on record as saying they don't want to be flip-flopping).

We have limited scholarships to offer this year.  Time to move on to the task of landing another great player.Â
