Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - CompSci87 - 03-19-2012

I have ESPN3 now too, but WHY is ESPN2 showing UConn here in Palo Alto?

Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - M T - 03-19-2012

At my house in Los Altos, the Stanford game is on ESPN2 HD.  (I'm not there, so I don't know about Standard Def)

Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - unclechuck - 03-19-2012

Even though the game was listed in our local paper for ESPN2 we're getting UConn v KSU here in San Diego.

I called my Time Warner folks to bitch and they gave me an ESPN number: 888 549-3776. They said the programming choice was ESPN's.

I called and actually got a human being, Bob, who informed me that only selected regional areas were getting the Stanford game while the majority of the country would be getting 'whip-around' coverage to ensure the most compelling game was broadcast.

Bob explained that only northern California was considered regional by ESPN so southern California would be getting the whip. At that time the UC/KSU game was 15-3, UConn. Really compelling.

They told me to go to ESPN3, I told him I pay $150 a month to my cable company why should I have to watch a game on my laptop? Stanford is higher ranked, I'm in the Pac12 footprint, what gives?

Robbie, is it hubris or do they just enjoy sticking it to the West Coast folks? BTW, the game was 29-5 when I turned it off.

I have UVerse. I called UVerse and talked to two different people, who claimed it was ESPN's choice to show the wrong game here. I suspect it is actually UVerse's mistake, given what MT said, and that I just got the drones whose job it is to make people go away instead of helping them.

San Diego, though -- the coverage map I saw on ESPN's web site said that only northern California gets the Stanford game. So at least they are consistent on that one, though it was a bad choice IMO.

p.s. I just called the ESPN number from unclechuck's post, and the guy there at least wants to be helpful. He's checking into it and will send an email  Probably in time for the game to be over...

next year, get Direct TV :) Get rid of ATT AND Universe. :)

Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - CompSci87 - 03-19-2012

UVerse switched to the Stanford game with 15 minutes left in the 2nd half.

I'm very far away from the television programming decision makers (I don't know that I've even met any), but as you are no doubt aware, the UConn campus is very close to ESPN headquarters, and there is institutional bias.

As much as we may love it, and as far-reaching as its accomplishments are, Stanford is not a name that draws viewers, nor sponsors. Sorry to say.

But  the feedback does not fall on deaf ears. I know the lead editor that I work with reads every message sent to ESPN Mobile, and forwards the ones on to me that are products that I work on.

Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - Farm93 - 03-19-2012

Really have no expectation now on this one.  UConn is the women's Duke for ESPN.  If they play, the nation must watch.

The UConn game was out of hand in the first 10 minutes, so ESPN could/should have moved on.  Of course, Stanford's game was not that much closer by that time, so it is hard to know if ESPN would have moved to Stanford if the game was closer.

Next week there are far fewer conflicts, so all will be fine.

FWIW - I agree a game should play across the footprint of the conferences involved in most cases.  If conflicts emerge, then the area should be forced to watch the highest seed from that greater geographical area until the game is out of hand.

The people living in the Pac-12 just never get to see their conference play unless the game starts around 11PM Eastern.

I was in maples tonight and ESPN had the UConn game on until it the huskies were up 30 at which point they switched it over to the Maryland Louisville game. I mean I was in freaking Maples and I couldn't watch the STANFORD game. If MAPLES isn't in the Stanford footprint, I don't know what is. Thanks ESPN. The game was awesome on my computer.

Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - yvonne - 03-20-2012

I received a message from support:
Quote:It is our goal to serve our fans by offering the game with the most compelling action.

So, yeah. ESPN thinks Connecticut by 30 is more compelling than any of our games.

That is, indeed, strange.  ESPN2-HD [725, I think] on Comcast in Menlo Park had the Stanford game from start to finish.

Evidently Maples was playing ESPN2. According to the coverage maps on ESPN's web site, ESPN2 was SUPPOSED to be showing the Stanford women's game at the time. So this was not Stanford's fault.

Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - Viking_Guy - 03-20-2012

I think a lot of this depends on where the feed originates.  Some large bulk subscribers get out of area feeds, which may be the case at Stanford.  For example, if you are part of a local cable co-op like Palo Alto is (was?), sometimes the "geographic" location of the feed is not your physical location, but the provider's.  For example, for a while I lived in an apartment complex that had its own cable deal.  Part of that deal was that the feed came through a source about 30 miles away, which meant for that the local weather forecast on the Weather Channel was for that town, rather than mine.

Stanford seems like a large enough corporate body (especially given its non-incorporated status) that they might very well have a feed from a large provider that isn't geographically tagged appropriately.

Just a thought.

Re: WTF - ESPN NOT broadcasting our women's game - CompSci87 - 03-20-2012

That could be, or it could have been part of the same mistake that caused AT&T UVerse to give me the national feed instead of the Stanford game at my home in Palo Alto, 1.5 miles away from Maples. Who knows?

I have Directv and I am not getting the Stanford games either and I live in Oakland. I have been talking with Directv and they have not yet corrected the problem. The only way I see the Stanford games has been to pay $16 for each game through Directv's Full Court. I'm glad the ESPN number has been posted. I will talking with them shortly.

Checking today's coverage maps, I see that all of California is (supposed to be) getting the The School near Oakland game today. In ESPN's infinite wisdom, apparently they have ascertained that Cal has more of a statewide following than Stanford does.  ::)

I'm sure I could have talked to some of the guys in the video room and they could have gotten the Stanford game. But the TV in the operations office had ESPN2 from DirecTV and there was no Stanford game. So I went back to Arrillaga to watch it on my computer.

As for the Cal game being televised throughout California, I don't think that had anything to do with Cal. As ESPN knows, everyone in California clearly wants to watch Notre Dame.Â
