Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - Gauss - 03-29-2012

That 4-point play by Bright was sweeeet  ;D
8 points now.

But the previous missed lay-up, missed dunk, and block on the end was crazy.

Pretty fun so far, and Go Cardinal!

Irrational exubherance - FarmBoy - 03-29-2012

Am I crazy to think that we could be a top 25 team next year? Probably, but these last 5 games have been a lot of fun, and if we can play with the reckless abandon into next year, we could do some damage.

We will miss Josh Owens though. We are going to be lacking in the "beef" department next year.

Re: Irrational exubherance - Gauss - 03-29-2012

And now, the most ludicrous missed dunk I've seen, lol.

I don't know man. The defense, especially the hustle, is pretty good, but the offense is frustrating as hell. There's some talent coming in, but for top-25, we might need some miracles (maybe a new coach?).

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - doug - 03-29-2012

No way we are top 25 next year without major improvement onthe offensive end.  How many consecutive trips to the offensive end without even getting off a shot did we have in the final few minutes of the 1st half?  Almost unwatchable for me.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - dabigv13 - 03-29-2012

A bit sloppy, but I can't lie, this is fun to watch. If we can find just a bit more consistency on the offensive end we could be really good next year. Great defensive intensity.

Also that dunk would've been awesome, but it wan't easy at all; the defender had his hand on the ball the entire way up.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - washingtonismoney - 03-29-2012

Offensively, we should be better because of maturity and losing our worst offensive players (i.e. Mann, Zimmerman, Trotter). We need more shooting on the floor, and thereotically Rosco Allen and Sanders seem to have that. The question, of course, is how much better.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - 97fan - 03-29-2012

Aren't we going to be awfully thin -- I mean that both literally and figuratively -- in the front court next season?

The only guys on the roster next year who are 6'8" or taller are Dwight Powell, John Gage and Stefan Nastic, plus incoming frosh Grant Verhoeven and Rosco Allen. Unfortunately, Gage and Powell are wing players, not post guys. And I think the same is true of Allen.

That seems like a big hole on what should otherwise be a good team.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - Gauss - 03-29-2012

Well, this is looking pretty good. Up by 15 points.

It might be obvious for you guys, but, aren't the ESPN commentator rather biased towards Minnesota?
They are very complimentary towards Stanford, but it's as if they regretted it.

It doesn't bother me, but I was wondering if was just me.

Thought they've been balanced, but they--like most media figures--have been deferential to the elder statesman Tubby Smith.

It certainly might be a problem. If the level Dwight Powell has shown over this tournament is anything close to the level he'll be showing next season, and he can bring it consistently, we'll be fine at the big men positions with the help of Huestis and Gage (who's the in-vogue stretch 4 NBA teams are searching for). Contributions from either Nastic or Verhoeven would be much appreciated, of course.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - FarmBoy - 03-29-2012

Yeah, I know I'm getting ahead of myself on the top-25 dream. But I am starting to like this team.

Powell is a thin guy, but perhaps he can beef up before next year to do a little more damage in the paint. He actually has some decent post moves, but he doesn't have the butt to establish himself in the low post consistently.

Now, if Aaron Bright would grow a couple of inches, that would be golden. The kid's just too short and not quite lightening quick to get off his shot on those bigger guys. But I do like the craftiness of his game.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - Gauss - 03-29-2012

70-40, this is getting out of hand folks.
Stanford's made 10 of their last 11 shots.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - FarmBoy - 03-29-2012

Some of these ugly shots are a great reminder that there's a long way to go from being NIT champs to NCAA eligible.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - Griffins78 - 03-29-2012

OMG! Been at a conference all day and just walked into a restaurant/bar and saw us up 70 to 40. DOMINATE!

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - pefloresjr - 03-29-2012

Great job by the team tonight and in the tourney.  Yes, it is not the NCAA but you guys are acting like putzes focusing on the potential weaknesses and drawbacks of the coaching.  The coaches did a great job of getting the team to keep improving against decent competition at the end of the year.  There is some legitimate talent on this team and it seems that the recruits in the pipeline look pretty good as well.  Before the season, I thought that we probably had an NIT level team.  Winning the NIT is more than I expected.  Not a great deal more, but still more than I thought.  There is hope for the future based on the improved play at the end of the conference and in this tournament.  I'm going to go have another beer and enjoy the victory.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - washingtonismoney - 03-29-2012

Two more congrats in order:

Congrats to Andy Brown--every point must be sweet after his three blown ACLs.

And congrats to Aaron Bright, who was named NIT Outstanding Player.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - burger - 03-29-2012

Great win.

And, on that note, Johnny Dawkins gets a free pass from me for next season*.  I still have my doubts about him, but between the NIT championship and the great recruiting, it would be foolish to say he should be fired.  He deserves at least one more year to see if he can take the team to the next level.

*I reserve the right to change my mind if we start 0-12 or something similar.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - Spiny_Norman - 03-29-2012

Make room for (at least) one trophy in the Hall of Fame room!

+1 also to Mike Patrick for citing Kim Belton, the producer for the broadcast and one of the top players in Stanford hoops history.  I have not seen him since his final Stanford game when he put them team on his back, scored 41 points and led Stanford to an OT win over USC.  But he was and probably still is a really good guy.

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - washingtonismoney - 03-29-2012

Congrats also very much deserved to Dick Davey, who just coached his last game of basketball: http://www.mercurynews.com/mark-purdy/ci_20260911/mark-purdy-stanford-coach-dick-davey-going-out

Re: Stanford-Minnesota: some crazy plays - Farm93 - 03-29-2012

Sure it was fueled by a bunch of NIT wins, but....

The winningest team in the Pac-12 this year...wait for it....

Stanford with 26 wins.

dude have you even seen Powell play?! He's not remotely close to being a wing player. He just need to bulk up some more and not jack up long jump shots. His defense really improved a ton towards the end of the season too. I think he starts at center next season.
