Most biting comment of the game - Redrum - 04-02-2012

Baylor coach Kim Mulkey's flourescent blue and hot pink patterned  pants suit made her look like an old woman all dolled up for the ladies' Garden Club.

This from my couch mate,  whose Deep South upbringing makes her an expert on spotting  how ladies of a certain age dress for the local Garden Club.

Garvin,

1. Your reports from my hometown have been great. Perhaps you could scout out retirement locales for me next.  Or at least good places to have a midlife crisis.

2. If this is the Brown Palace I remember (as in the unsinkable), then Stanford Athletics must be pretty flush with cash.  Nice digs.  And I totally remember the Stock Yards Cowboy Indian references. The old Denver Rockets ABA team played there, as did our high school basketball team in the state playoffs.  The odor through open car windows on I-70 reminds me of my youth. Or ute as the Brooklyn attorneys say when traveling in Alabama.

3. Our kingdom for a bunch of press eating guards.  I was cringing when they dribbled back toward their own basket. ND did the same thing toward the end of their game and it nearly cost them. And I would exchange three or four more Griner blocks for fearless offense. She wouldn't get them all.  Nneka could blow by her most of the time.

4. Nneka's statement sort of puts it all in perspective. Trophies really don't mean that much when stacked up against a lifetime of memories.

We can recommend both the Denver Art Museum slogan: DAM That's Good Art, and the Museum of Nature and Science to fans trying to stay out of the cold.  Both exceeded expectations.

One more item of potential interest...both wbbfan and I had exactly the same reaction when Nneka was talking to us (the gathered fans) in the lobby after the game and Nneka said that she wouldn't trade her years at Stanford for anything or for the chance to play for this coach.  They put their arms around each other and it was the only moment we can remember when we thought Tara was going to cry.

It was a powerful moment that spoke to how much Nneka meant to Tara.

It reminded me of the time Amy Tucker told us that Nneka was the team translator, saying things such as "When Tara says this she means..." or "When Amy says this she means..."

She will be missed for many reasons.

Garvin,

great post!  on the how to beat the press 101, may be we could get a discount if we send the WBB and MBB coaches together?  I recall Syracuse's press completely unwinding us earlier in the year.

after your post-game bar bill, the short stroll in El Paso doesn't seem so bad does it?

I thought a box of Crayolas had exploded on Mulkey.

Tough loss.  Stanford dared the Baylor guards to beat them, and they did.  Shooting percentages for both team down, but I think primarily due to the excellent defense played by both teams.

Sad to see Nneka go.  She's a special one.
