SC is the best combination of academics and football in the country. It's true--Lane Kiffin said so (http://247sports.com/Article/Behind-the-pledge-Max-Browne-69012). Lane Kiffin's football team has finished below Stanford's in each year of his tenure, so maybe SC's sterling academic reputation is doing the work here.

When I read Chris Hawkins' assessment of his chosen alma mater, I wasn't sure if his dad or Lane Kiffin was feeding him his talking points.  Max Browne has cleared that up.

"“The academics Stanford has are great, but USC sort of has the same academic stature,” he said. “I don’t plan on moving out of California after my career is done, so a USC degree is just as valuable as one from Stanford. "

How Kiffin can say that with a straight face is beyond me. On the overall sports and academics topic, they have to fall behind Stanford, Notre Dame, UNC, UC B.erkeley, Duke, and perhaps even Vanderbilt to name the first few that come to mind.

If he's talking about top football programs plus school academics, the list is shorter, but fallacy great given his 0-2 record vs. Stanford (and our 4 of the last 5 overall) plus clear dominance in academics.

I guess he meant he doesn't plan on living outside of California after his NFL career is done and not his college career...but if he plans on having a successful NFL career (and then actually does), no one's going to care what degree he has.

Re: Today in Facts You May Not Have Known: - FarmBoy - 04-06-2012

I also thought the comment about not planning to live outside of CA was pretty naive. Who plans that at 18? Maybe he comes from a family that's lived in the same neighborhood/region for generations, but nowadays it's more likely than not that you will live in a different town than the one you were raised.

Let's face it, it's all just cognitive dissonance rationalization but someone who chose the shiny football team and is coming to terms with the rest of the package.

I hope he likes the sound of "Conquest."  Bad times in store for him if not.

Why stop there, Max?  You could have cited the significantly lower crime rate in South Central versus Palo Alto.  You could have mentioned that none other than Facebook and Google are located just minutes from the S.C. campus.  And how about the fact that S.C. has more Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, and Nobel Prizewinners than Stanford (which I believe has none of the above).  Plus, Stanford is in Kansas, not California.  It snows in June, for gosh sake, in fact I think it's snowing there now.  You could have brought that up also.

But, but....remember the Amir Carlisle rationalization? - Redrum - 04-06-2012

He said he switched commitments to USC because he was interested in the entertainment industry and USC had all sorts of contacts that could help him in his entertainment career.

Amir suddenly got interested in scrap metal recovery and used brick recycling, so he's  now in South Bend,  where Notre Dame can give him all the contacts he needs.

Stanford is building another great class this year. No need to be salty.

Re: Today in Facts You May Not Have Known: - yvonne - 04-07-2012

except that you were the guy who talked major smack about how we were going to suffer for losing Amir to SC.

I think Braveheart confuses "being salty" with "well-deserved mockery."

I was? ??? Show me the quotes.  I've been pretty good here, usually just passing along info and such. If I did, I apologize, that's not what I come here for.

And, to followup on Braveheart while he's stunned - Redrum - 04-07-2012

The comment was about Amir's silliness.  Not really about USC.  In fact,  I concede that USC probably has better contacts with the LA  entertainment industry.

How do I 1+ your post? Do I even have such a privilege here?
