He'd leave LSU with a 67-64 record.

Fire Bob Bowlsby!! - Redrum - 04-07-2012

Unless... we can get him to convince LSU to hire Dawkins.

Is Wilner writing letters to the Times-Picayune?

Huh... I hadn't realized that Johnson couldn't make it past the first round of the tournament we won this year... even with "having no academic restrictions in terms of being able to recruit kid [sic]" (quote from Johnson's intro presser at LSU).

Moving from LSU to TCU doesn't feel like an upward move to me.  But then, neither did leaving Stanford to take the job at LSU, never mind Bowlsby's intent or non-intent.  It's not like I'm biased on that one, though  :).

Nope--definitely a downward move. TCU's previous coach left for Ohio. Not THE Ohio State University, but that other Ohio. It's in the MAC. Basically, Johnson left for a school whose previous coach thought moving to Ohio is an upward move.

TCU is going into the Big 12, but it is for sure a downgrade.

It has been interesting to see the trend of coaches downshifting.  I don't remember it happening all that often, but now it is common.  In the old days, you'd pretty much just get fired, do some TV, and then resurface.  Now guys seem to jump as soon as a firing seems possible.  Tubby Smith did it.  Herb Sendek.  Steve Alford.  Probably some others.  Now Trent..

One possible aspect to it:  I saw none other than Nick Robinson (who remained on Trent's staff when he left) got a D-1 job with Southern Utah.  Congrats Nick!  There is actually a decent Stanford coaching tree out there with Robinson joining Reveno, Russell Turner, and some of the Monty disciples.

Trent Johnson's pie hole - Redrum - 04-07-2012

Trying to remember the name of the Stanford guard he threw under the bus (Johnson, also?) in front of the media,  claiming he knew Stanford could never win big because he saw how slow he was,  losing contests for loose balls to more athletic opponents.
That was classy.

Not sure of the importance or relevance of the discussion around step down or downgrade for Coach Johnson.  Clearly, he and his family are already financially set for life if he managed his finances well.  And he was able to do this simply from helping 10 to 15 young men improve their ability to play a game he and they love about 35 times per year.  Pretty amazing.  If Coach Johnson or any of us should choose or be forced to leave a job at one employer to do the same thing we love and do well for another employer and still make  more than 99.5 percent of the people in the world, downgrade/step down wouldn't be among the top 1000 of our concerns.  Don't know his circumstances, but can see how as a guy approaching 60, he might want to join an employer with values more in line with his as it moves into a higher level of competition.  Definitely could be a fresh start and opportunity to finish out his career doing something he absolutely loves and thrives on.  Seems like a pretty good deal to me and I wish him well.

Mitch Johnson, yeah. Not particularly classy, but also revealing of what a poor coach Trent was. Mitch was Trent's guy. It was pretty obvious early on that Mitch wouldn't do much better than a competent point guard, but instead Trent decided to give a scholarship to Drew Shiller, who couldn't even get minutes at USF. Somehow, despite having two of the more gifted big men in college basketball, who caused the defense to collapse around him, Trent couldn't find a good shooting point guard. Whatever you think of Johnny Dawkins, it'd be truly wonderful if we could donate his point guard recruiting to Trent--could you imagine how scary that Stanford team would've been with Randle, or, hell, even Bright? Trent could've played around Mitch's limitations by playing him less--more Goods at point guard, even some Fred Washington as a point forward, but Trent rarely even bothered to try.

Ultimately Trent cheated himself there--with a better point guard, Stanford wins a conference title and advances past the Sweet 16.

Re: Trent Johnson to TCU? - pincemob - 04-07-2012

In Trent's defense, I think he recruited some of Stanford's good point guards in the late 90s.  He also had good points at Nevada, one of whom is on the Lakers now (Sessions).    But people used to joke that Mitch was his son, that was how attached to him he was.  Not unlike Monty and Giovacchini though.  It is hard to always know what is going on behind the scenes to make coaches favor players seemingly irrationally.

it's his 4th "dream" school.  what's not to like?
