I didn't know the term, but it seems a little unlikely that an editor would go from man-eater to carpet eater without knowing that.

I agree with a couple of the commenters, specifically (i) on "carpeteater" not being the derogatory term, and (ii) the apparent inconsistency of being okay with "maneater" but offended to the soul by "carpeteater."

Shaking my head . . .

P.S.  I also liked the comment calling for the passage of a "Lighten up, Francis" law, with stiff penalties for noncompliance.
