Barbieri out at KNBR -
yvonne - 04-11-2012
The Chronicle is reporting that Ralph Barbieri is out at KNBR. (Merc repeats the report, but cites the Chron, so it probably has no confirming source.)

The blog post mentions that Barbieri has Parkinson's disease, but also quotes Barbieri as having conversations with Lew Dickey, the CEO of Cumulus Media, parent company of KNBR, saying both that the disease is not of consequence and that the company wanted Barbieri.

Reports that Barbieri's contract was renewed.
This blog quotes him as having renewed it in December.

Darn it, Yvonne, you had my hopes up there... >:(
Is it possible BOTH are true? - Redrum - 04-11-2012
His contract was renewed and now, 4 mos. later, he's being let go?

Yes, Redrum, sorry I wasn't clear on that. His contract was renewed in December, AND he was let go either yesterday or today. (Conflicting reports)

Hooray!!! He was a jerk. Very prejudiced against Stanford and went out of his way to criticize us.. among his tired rants:
- John Elway was an idiot and proof that Stanford had no academic standards
- Andrew Luck was overrated
- The Raiders won in spite of Jim Plunkett, not because of him
- Stanford fans are boorish snobs who don't deserve their teams
- Recent Stanford success due to pressure from alums (including Flemming) to lower academic standards
He really never missed a chance to get in a jab against Stanford.. he had similar axes with the A's and Raiders. I hope Ted Robinson replaces him.. he is pretty much the opposite personality and brings wonderful insights.Â

When he went on a rant about how arrogant Andrew Luck is, I concluded that he has no redeeming social value whatsoever. (Not sure I ever thought he did, but I was pretty much willing to live and let live up till then.)

definitely not amicable

Re: Barbieri out at KNBR - pincemob - 04-12-2012
I almost forgot how he once spent half an hour questioning if Andrew Luck could even make it in the NFL as a game manager.Â

LOL! UCBerkeley partisans hated Barbieri because he was seen as anti-B.ear. LSJU partisans disliked him because he was perceived as anti-Cardinal. Perhaps the truth lies in the middle - he was a curmudgeon who hated college sports.... ;-)
Regardless, I stopped listening to him years ago because he constantly interrupted his guests. I am glad he is gone. Perhaps the station will hire someone a bit more friendly towards college athletics (I doubt it because the Bay Area really doesn't give a darn about anything but pro sports but one can always wish......)

He wasn't merely
perceived as anti-Stanford. He actually said outright that he disdained Stanford.
Re: Barbieri out at KNBR - pincemob - 04-12-2012
I never thought he was pro- C.al.  He would say he liked the liberal aspects of the school but believed those aspects would preclude them from ever being good in sports. So in a sense, he was pro- C.al, but anti- C.al sports.Â

I did love how Barbieri pretty much had to eat crow over his early dissing of Jim Harbaugh, especially after he was hired by the Niners and led them to such a great first season.

I listen(ed) to the Razor and Mr. T on my drive for many months. It's basically the only option when NPR is on pledge drive... I didn't mind Ralph in general, though his voice is grating, but it always mystified me that they ignored Stanford football the past two years except for the odd "Toby/Luck may not translate to the NFL" discussions

He never ate crow. Couldn't possibly. He was too busy fellating new 49er coach Harbaugh. He's a good example of what can happen if you become a vegetarian. The hell with him!
