Luck and Fleener will attend the first round NFL draft ceremony -

I wonder why DeCastro and Martin won't attend. Is Martin worried that his stock has fallen to the second round? DeCastro is a sure first round pick. Is pomp and circumstance not his thing? I'd love to see all four Stanford players sitting together, it would be a great image for future recruiting.

I'm sure the players have to pay for their entire entourage's attendance as well as their own attendance at the event...and if DeCastro and Martin have large circles of friends/family who they don't want to be far from during the ceremony, then that's understandable (although the four players together would make a great photo-op).

What, is Landry Fields' couch occupied?

Also, recall that Fleener is an east coast guy, so a good chance to go home & visit.
I'm not following the draft projections all that closely, but my impression is that there aren't all that many great fits for Coby and I would not anticipate him going 1st round. Hopefully early 2nd with a good team where he could be a luxury pick to fill a need.
I did see one mock draft showing him going to San Diego. Living in SD and reading the sports pages down here I see too many other needs - particularly defensive - to see him go 1st round here.
Would be happy to be convinced of the error of my perceptions.

The Giants lost two TEs to cal injuries in the Super Bowl. They have the 32nd pick in the first round, and Fleener might be a good pick for them.

Thanks for the hint, wbbf2. That would be a great situation for him - elite QB, solid team, home state, etc. I did a quick search and, while no less a luminary than Mr. Kiper himself is calling Toby to NYG, most of the buzz is around OL with Wisconsin's Peter Konz, Ole Miss' Bobby Massie, tOSU Mike Adams & LSJU's Jonathan Martin in the mix.
At least he's in the leaders group.

I thought "Cal injuries" were the fake ones used to slow down fast-paced, opposing offenses. ;)

I've actually seen some talk that if Fleener is still available when the 49ers pick comes up in the first round, Harbaugh might draft Fleener. I think Harbaugh's head may explode thinking about a 3 TE set.

Niners will have Vernon Davis, Fleener, and...? But Davis is a great TE in his own right, so two would be enough, I'd think. Add a fullback...

Delanie Walker is kind of a hybrid TE/Fullback/H-Back. He's pretty good. To be honest, I can't see them picking Fleener for that reason--I'd rather see the Niners maybe move up for DeCastro, or sit where they are and pick up a corner or wideout.

Back to the question of attending...
The first round takes an impossible amount of time. While casual NFL fans can turn surf for other entertainment options, the players at the venue have to stay "on" the entire time. Any hint of boredom or worry gets covered by 5-10 former players covering the event. Then the last in the area has the awkward experience of being the last guy in the room, or the best player available for 5-15+ picks.
Unless you are a definite top 10 pick, I would guess most agents would advise the player to stay at home.
At your home the draft coverage will show you, AND all of your friends, while you wait. But if you want to escape the coverage you just jump to a different room in the house. If you don't get picked on schedule then you and your agent jump on the cell phone and chat for a while to make it look like you are busy. No need to worry about looking like the last kid to be picked in gym class or anything of that sort.
It is a far better image IMHO. The best thing for the school you attended must take a back seat given that the draft is really about the player and their NFL future.
