Interesting quote from the article:

Couch and Leaf were abject failures, Mirer never really made it and Plunkett's career was careening toward oblivion before he righted the ship and won two Super Bowl rings with the Raiders in his mid-30s.

Yeah, other than those two Super Bowl things, the guy was a bust...  ???

IIRC, Plunkett was ROY behind an O-line with the Patriots that , in its entirety [and with the second-string thrown in for good measure] probably was slightly less effective than David DeCastro would be if you tied his arms and legs together and blindfolded him.  Forget about oblivion, Plunkett had to spend a few years "careening for his life..."

I hope Andrew isn't forced to do the same.  I imagine it's a little harder to cattouse people in the NFL...

Whoa, that is a pretty big disparity.  You never know how seriously each guy took the test, and very hard to draw any conclusions based on a 50 question test.  With that said, RG3 seemed to take every competition very seriously and I can't imagine him tanking his Wonderlic.  Below is how the Wonderlic maps to other professions, per Wikipedia.  The average football player is around 20.

Systems Analyst - 32
Chemist – 31
Electrical Engineer - 30
Engineer - 29
Programmer – 29
Accountant - 28
Executive - 28
Reporter - 28
Teacher - 28
Copywriter - 27
Investment Analyst - 27
Librarian - 27
Electronics technician - 26
Salesperson – 25
Secretary - 24
Dispatcher - 23
Drafter - 23
Electrician - 23
Nurse - 23
Bank teller – 22
Cashier - 21
Firefighter - 21
General Clerical worker – 21
Machinist - 21

So he's not only a horse's ass, but a bag of academic hot air, too. Good to know.

a systems analyst rates higher than an electrical engineer?  what?

Re: Andrew Luck's Wonderlic: 37, Robert Griffin's Wonderlic: 24 - CowboyIndian - 04-20-2012

Plunkett's other problem with the Pats...besides a porous OL...was his coach, former Oklahoma head man Chuck Fairbanks, who tried to institute the QB option in the pros with one of the greatest pocket passers of all time. Jim paid for that experiment and he's still paying today.

RG III was heavily recruited by Stanford and was considered a shoo-in for admission. I wouldn't be too hard on him.

You wouldn't....I would. Makes the world go 'round.

I just don't see how you get Griffin's (unofficially reported) Wonderlic score of 24 = "bag of academic hot air". Where has the connection been made between Wonderlic and academics? My understanding of the Wonderlic is that it tests one's ability quickly process and analyze information. It doesn't test how hard you study or the knowledge you've gained over a lifetime of study. RGIII is a poli sci major, for god's sakes. How many poli scie questions do you think are on the Wonderlic?

I strongly suspect that Andrew Luck is the smarter of the two, both academically and native intelligence, but this score says nothing about RGIII's academic credentials. In fact, he's succeeded despite not have a brain that inherently processes and organizes data as quickly as Luck's (assuming these reported scores are accurate.)

Looks like "no correlation" is the most likely answer to "how much to Wonderlic scores matter in predicting QB performance?"

Re: Andrew Luck's Wonderlic: 37, Robert Griffin's Wonderlic: 24 - LuckE2Bhere - 04-27-2012

but a regression that reasonably adjusted for other factors could be interesting -- i.e., if a QB had incredible talents, but a lower Wonderlic score, and proved to be a mediocre NFL QB, it might still justify the significance of the indicator.

I shudder to think what my wonderlic score would be - Redrum - 04-27-2012

RGIII would kick my ass.

If you mention that Andrew Luck is better than RG3 at something, you are a racist biased against black quarterbacks! DO NOT talk about Luck's longer broad jump at 20 pounds heavier or Lucks much higher wonderlick score. Shhhhh!!! Also, do not mention that luck is bigger and stronger. Remember, in this draft, there are really two first picks, Luck and RG3. Don't be a racist. Thanks. :)
