ESPN Article - The Stanford predicament - Griffins78 - 04-24-2012

This went up a few days ago and must have been in the ESPN Magazine a little while age but I hadn't seen anyone post about it. It's about Stanford four probable first rounders in the NFL Draft.

The Stanford predicament, by Seth Wickersham in ESPN The Magazine

I really liked Shaw breaking down the film on a single play against Wazzu and Wickersham writing about Shaw pointing out the details of each of the four - their contribution to the success of that play, the development each had to go through while at Stanford over the years, and their dedication and hard work to get to the point where they could collectively execute the play.

This has been posted all over ESPN. It's also on the Pac12 and Stanford blogs. In the comment section of the Pac12 version, an Oregon points out an obvious oddity in the article: why did Shaw choose a play from the WSU game for the film break down? Wouldn't something from the USC, Notre Dame, or even Oregon games have made for more compelling story-lines? You shouldn't need 4 first-round draft picks to beat WSU.

But I liked the article, and I've been wondering the same thing. With that much talent, how do you know which of the players is a true first rounder and who's getting over valued? The point about U.SC in 2006 is very telling:

Quote:In 2006, five USC players, including Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, came off the board in the first 45 picks. Combined Pro Bowls: zero.

Of course, I'm not sure what percentage of all first round picks make a pro-bowl in their first six years in the league, so maybe that's not overly concerning. But the NFL draft seems like as much of a crap shoot as high school recruiting. On the whole, the higher you're picked, the better you'll PROBABLY be, but lots 5 star guys flame out and some 2 star guys become great.

I think a 60+ yd play definitely deserves some attention.

Loved watching that little video!  Not your usual cliché-fest.  True comaraderie among incredible men, whose intelligence is clearly evident in their sense of humor.

Now for the cliché: makes me proud!  :)
