Quote:Luck has long been touted as the best quarterback in the draft, and the favorite to go to the rebuilding Colts. But Griffin believes he still had a chance to go first overall until a couple of weeks ago.

Griffin and Luck both had impressive Pro Days, but the Colts wanted to host both for private workouts to take final looks at each passer. Luck obliged. Griffin did not.

After Griffin turned the Colts down, the team stopped showing interest in him, he said.

“They offered me a private workout and we refused. I didn’t do any private workouts for anybody,” Griffin said. “After that, I think feelings might’ve been hurt or something like that. I went to D.C. on a visit and [Indianapolis] didn’t offer a visit at all, and so we kind of knew what direction they were going. But Andrew’s their guy. You can’t be mad about that.”

“Me and Andrew competed for that first pick when we had no real control of what that is,” Griffin said. “Him going first, me going second isn’t a reflection of who’s better. It’s just a better fit for a team. For the rest of our careers, we’ll be linked. Hopefully we’ll be the greatest link of all time.”

Yeah man, they totally took Andrew even though they really wanted you because you turned them down.

Yeah, in the Gruden football camp, he said Washington didn't move up to No. 2 to pick someone they thought was second best.

Sounds to me like he's in denial.

The Gods' curse on Robert Griffin III - Redrum - 04-25-2012

That he will be doomed to eternally compare himself to Luck.  For good or for ill,  without Luck as a doppelganger,  his life won't make sense.  In this case, the only possible answer to not being picked first is that Luck was more...polite.

Haters gon' hate.

Re: Robert Griffin III believes he may have hurt Colts’ feelings - yvonne - 04-26-2012

OK negative voter. I get it. I was not clear on the concept!  :-[ I like our guy!

On my other point, at 3:13 here, Griffin claims there are two No. 1 picks, and "Washington didn't trade up to No. 2 to pick a guy at No. 2."

Re: Robert Griffin III believes he may have hurt Colts’ feelings - FarmBoy - 04-26-2012

All this "we're both number one picks" definitely smacks of desperation. You won the Voldemort. Enjoy that. You didn't hear Toby in 2009 saying "well, it was so close, clearly it's a split Voldemort." Is he going to be telling people for the rest of his life that he was picked 1B in the 2012 draft? Will he be forever updating his Wikipedia entry to make sure the world knows that he would have been #1 had the Redskins had the first pick? Just say you're happy to be drafted by the Redskins and move on.

Griffin has said some pretty stupid and egotistical stuff.  But if the media had reported every stupid and egotistical thing that I said when I was trying to land my first job out of school, I would have looked really bad, too (as most of us would, I expect).  So Griffin's quotes don't surprise me at all, or make me think less of him.  But it's pretty impressive that Andrew has managed to avoid saying anything stupid yet.

But the point is: Griffin seems COMPELLED to say it - Redrum - 04-26-2012

Do something enough,  it begins to look like a character trait,  not just the accident of being quoted.

Re: Robert Griffin III believes he may have hurt Colts’ feelings - yvonne - 04-26-2012

Appropriate statements might include:

"I hope to go somewhere where I fit in well and can help that team get to the Super Bowl."

"It's not always the highest rated quarterback who has the best pro career. I'm hoping to become the best pro quarterback I can be." (less tactful than the one above, but still not in denial.)

"I'm looking toward the next part of my career and am focused on being the best at that level."

"Just as the post season rankings matter more in college football than the preseason rankings, so I'm planning to let the end of my career tell the story of what kind of football player I'll be."

"Sure, I'm disappointed at not being picked No. 1, but what really matters is how I perform with the team that does choose me, and I can't let aything stand in the way of developing into a great quarterback for them."

Right now, those appropriate statements sound more like Andrew than Robert.  But hey, Robert's allowed to project whatever public image he wants to project.  He's going to the big boy league now.

I agree with Redrum. I had nothing against RGIII for winning the Voldemort and personally thought it was at least depatable whether he should go #1 instead of Luck. But I've seen enough of his quotes since then to realize that's he's a bit petty and overly vain. This isn't one time letting it slip he thought he was #1b. I've seen similar quotes in 3-4 different interviews. I believe it's a storyline he and his people are trying to push as part of their marketing agenda.

No real harm in it. Won't change how either plays on the football field. But it does harbinger things to come in his personality.

To the contrary, from an article in today's The Daily News here in the Bay Area [not yet posted online, from what I can tell]:

[regarding Luck and RGIII being linked...] "The package deal is fine with Luck, who said he became friends with Griffin during the college award season. 'I understand that we'll be linked forever in our careers.  And hopefully we'll have long, fruitful careers,' Luck said. 'And I'll root for him -- unless we're playing him.  I'm sure he'll say the same thing.  He's a great guy, and I definitely wish him all the best.'"

Yvonne couldn't have written more gracious comments herself...

The best comment in the article was something else, however.

"Other highlights from Luck's meeting with the press [Wednesday morning]: -- What will he miss most about college?  'Beating Cal.' "

Brings tears to your eyes...

Quote:What will he miss most about college?  'Beating The School near Oakland.' "

I gotta admit, I was surprised he said this. I would have thought the pleasure of his triumphs over U.SC would trump the wins over C.al. Let's face it, participating in the "what's your deal" game along with 2 great come from behind victories to become the only Stanford QB to go 3-0 against the Trojans has got to beat the memory of throwing the game losing INT and having an all too-close game in 2011 at home. Sure, he's got the great memory of leading a team to the most points scored in a Big Game in 2010 and Cattousing the B.ears to break it open. But I personally will more fondly remember the wins against the boys down south than across the bay. But that's just me.

Re: Robert Griffin III believes he may have hurt Colts’ feelings - Leftcoast - 04-26-2012

Stanford fans have become overly touchy about the Griffin/Luck competition.  Personally I think it's stretching to read Griffin's fairly innocuous comments and see a deep character flaw.  Seeing one may say more about us than him - Perhaps we'll always have a chip on our shoulder over RG3 after he beat out our guy for the Voldemort.

For me the bottom-line is Griffin is a competitor who excelled at the college level and has every reason to think he's darn good.  I'm sure his future Washington teammates are quite glad he thinks he was pick 1B.  He's not slighting Luck in his comments so why do Stanford fans expect him to publicly state that he was second best?

I'd like the ridiculous hype and expectations to ratchet down a little (well, a lot!) for both of these still 22 year olds.

Re: Robert Griffin III believes he may have hurt Colts’ feelings - FarmBoy - 04-26-2012

And now Richardson can claim he's 1C!

Quote:I'd like the ridiculous hype and expectations to ratchet down a little (well, a lot!) for both of these still 22 year olds.

I'll second that motion. It's a shame that both them will have to step in right away. But at least the NFL is more QB friendly, so the chance of big injuries is at least lessened.
