Wuh oh..... - dabigv13 - 05-02-2012

Bowlsby likely new Big 12 commish....on phone now so hard to post a link but its on espn.com.

Bad development in my opinion. Say what you will about Dawkins, BB has been a big step up fron Ted overall.

Re: Wuh oh..... - washingtonismoney - 05-02-2012

Not going to happen, but I'd love this guy as a replacement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Luck

Re: Wuh oh..... - oman - 05-02-2012

Would be pretty nice if that happened.  The challenge of trying to get WVa rolling in the Big12 would probably really appeal to him.

For some reason I had assumed that WVa athletic budget would be a step up from Stanford's but not so.

Re: Wuh oh..... - yvonne - 05-02-2012

Well, he will have two daughters attending Stanford in the fall.

Re: Wuh oh..... - Hank 91 - 05-03-2012

I was also a bit worried when I saw this this morning, but I think Bowlsby did enough to change the culture. The new AD will have no choice but to continue placing an emphasis on fielding teams in EVERY sport which are amongst the most competitive in the nation. Also, aside from salary issues about which I have no idea, I'd have to imagine that the Stanford AD job would be one of the most coveted such positions in the nation. No worries about scandals, a higher caliber of student athlete, beautiful campus, etc., etc. Plus, it's apparently a stepping stone to becoming a conference commissioner. What's not to love?

Re: Wuh oh..... - Spiny_Norman - 05-03-2012

WIM, don't you have concerns about Oliver Luck based on the WVU coaching debacle?  Practically his first act as the AD was to run off the current football coach Bill Stewart (long-time assistant who was elevated to HC after RichRod left for Michigan) and negotiate behind his back for Dana Holgorsen to take over.  A stain on his resume.

If Bowlsby does leave, someone like Mike Izzi (former Stanford Assistant AD and current AD at UC Irvine) could receive consideration.

In the FWIW department, Wilner has a lost of candidates here:

My early entrant for the year's most irrelevant headline/article:

Jon Wilner's "Stanford athletic director search: My list of potential candidates to replace Bob Bowlsby"

I'm not saying that some of the folks on the list aren't worth considering [although some really aren't].  I'm just having a hard time coming up with a more irrelevant notion than what Jon Wilner thinks about this...

By the way, is there any truth to the rumor that Bowlsby's last act as AD will be to rescind the seat license policy for Maples' lower bowl so we can all get our seats back...?  ::)

Re: Wuh oh..... - washingtonismoney - 05-03-2012

Jon Wilner's list did provide a scare when he listed Maryland's athletic director. That might wake me up in the middle of the night murmuring NO NO NO NO NO over and over again.

I don't view it as a stain as much as a complicated note. Stewart wasn't getting the job done and wouldn't ever get the job done; Holgorsen, on the other hand, looks to be a good coach so far. So judged by the standard of where Luck started at and where he's ended up at now, it looks good. On the other hand, as you note, the transition between the two--which is actually much weirder than you've written there--was awkward and a mistake. Luck should've just fired Stewart. Instead, he brought Holgorsen on as a coach-in-waiting (before accelerating the process considerably.) That was a mistake, and it's hard to imagine Luck hasn't learned from that experience.

If that were Luck's only sports experience I'd be a bit more wary. But he was also the GM of the Houston Dynamo before the AD position at WVU. That was uniformly excellent, as the team won two MLS championships; whenever something goes wrong with that team, invariably Houston fans demand (in joke, since they know he's not coming back) that Luck be brought back.

So I see Luck's resume as overall a very good one. I'd be surprised if Luck were brought in because WVU is his alma mater. If, however, he were brought in, I think it'd be an excellent hire.

Holgorsen has character issues--I found his WVU hiring to be disappointing in that light, but hey, a business is a business.

Stewart turned out to have a few character issues of his own....and Holgorsen is the better coach.

So did Harbaugh, if you remember.

Re: Wuh oh..... - washingtonismoney - 05-03-2012

Luck on the job:

Quote:“I have no comment on it,” Luck told me Thursday. When I told him that some people might interpret his remark to mean that he’s interested or at least not dismissing the idea out of hand, he said, “Yes, I know, but that’s all I want to say.”

FitzGerald--more reporting than Wilner. Well done. Overall, many names on the list overlap with Wilner's, though FitzGerald puts the Utah AD's name on there too. Depending on what he's done helping the football team, that might make an interesting choice also.

Nowhere near the likes of Holgorsen.

Maybe, maybe not. This from Yahoo Sports last June 10:

Though his departure is likely to be announced later Friday night as a resignation, Stewart will reportedly be fired with cause for conduct detrimental to the university, presumably over allegations that he lobbied at least one (and possibly two) West Virginia reporters to start a smear campaign against Holgorsen and that he may have been behind the report that (falsely, according to the university) painted Holgorsen as a serial drunk.

Re: Wuh oh..... - fullmetal - 05-03-2012

Hmm.  I think there was scuttlebutt out of Big12-land well before that.

Condi?? No. God, no! - Redrum - 05-03-2012

What is the argument for Condi?  Stanford has never had a woman AD.  (Sigh)  And look how Stanford and women athletes have suffered:  Trapped in what is arguably the premier women's program in college sports for decades on end.  Let's see, what else?  She's a very popular, recognizable figure.  Well, by that criteria,  why not Taylor Swift?  She's smart and has been successful in other fields.  OK,  then why not Carly Fiorina or Meg Whitman?    She's a BIG Stanford sports fan and helps with recruiting.   Then by all means give ME a shot,  too.  When did gladhanding and impressing recruits become a core competency for running an athletic program?  You hire coaching staffs to do that.

Condi is a great addition to the Stanford community and really does a great pitch with visiting recruits and their families.  But nothing in her professional resume equips her to run a top-flight athletic program.  Can you imagine where we'd be if instead of Bowlsby in 2006 Stanford had hired Rice to be AD?  Based on previous resume,  there's no contest.  Well,  our task is to find the next Bob Bowlsby.  He or she is out there,  but being a "she" shouldn't be the fulcrum issue.  Nor should having cleaned Gen. Colin Powell's clock with a vicious crackback block.  The one for us is out there somewhere and I hope a wise and rigorous search finds the right one for the right reasons.

Re: Wuh oh..... - BrevinsBest - 05-03-2012

Do you really think Condi wouldn't be a good AD? She's obviously intelligent and knowledgeable about Stanford politics. She's economically savvy, something Ted wasn't but Bob was, she has experience in higher education, and she knows about college athletics. Do you really think she couldn't have done what Bob did? Bowslby was responsible for hiring Harbaugh and...hiring Dawkins? He also got the AD's budget in check.

To some extent, the AD pretty much runs itself. Take this from somebody who has worked there.

I think Condi is high risk / moderate reward - Redrum - 05-03-2012

The Athletic Dept. "pretty much ran itself"-- notably the football program  into the ground before Bowlsby arrived.  All sorts of changes occurred on his watch,  some in the public spotlight, many behind the scenes.  The difference was that Bowlsby had done that kind of turnaround at Univ. of Iowa before.  The Stanford mess wasn't his first rodeo.  Do I think there's no chance that Condi could do it?  No.  There's a chance,  but not a lot of of extremely large proportions upside to lay against the risk that the Athletic Dept. is different from the State Dept. and White House.  The public persona and celebrity appeal are the least important factors in making the decision.
