Andrus Peat...the next Bob Whitfield? - washingtonismoney - 05-03-2012

Ivan Maisel seems to throw out that possibility (sort of): http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/61044/3-point-stance-wvu-made-the-right-move

Call me old fashioned, but I truly expected incoming frosh Kodi Whitfield (you know, Bob's offspring) to get his dad's number.

Re: Andrus Peat...the next Bob Whitfield? - washingtonismoney - 05-04-2012

Unless Kodi's planning to bulk up a lot, I'm not sure he could take #70, even if he wanted to.

Bummer.

I hate to go all old school, but... - Redrum - 05-05-2012

I think I'll wait until Peat actually starts blowing people away before I get too wound up about him.  Highly rated,  seems to have all the basic building blocks.  Glad we got him.  Now, let the fun begin.  We will know a couple more important things after Fall camp closes.  1)  Peat really IS all that  or... 2) Our highly-touted front 7 might not be all that.

Does anybody have some paper towels?  I need to clean up all the water Redrum just poured out of his half-empty glass...  ;D

This is obviously true in the NFL, but once upon a time you could wear any number you wanted in college, or at least I think you could. Am I wrong? Has that changed? Wide receivers wear single digits all the time in college, for example.

Re: Andrus Peat...the next Bob Whitfield? - Farm93 - 05-08-2012

Number rules are not as strict, but I think they exist.

Last year Fleming got hurt on a play during one of the Jumbo (6-7 OL) looks.  Mabry was wearing a TE type jersey over his true uniform.  Even before Fleming fell to the ground Mabry was sprinting over to the sideline.  There coaches ripped his TE number jersey, think Superman or Hulk, exposing his true OL jersey and number underneath.  He then raced to the huddle to become the 5th OL.

So that type of action would seem remarkably unnecessary if numbers did not matter at all.

I was looking for a better source, but could find only Wikipedia, which cites NCAA rulebook section 4 article 1

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_number_(American_football)

Quote:Backs 1-49 Snapper 50-59 Guard 60-69 Tackle 70-79 End 80-99
Otherwise all player must be numbered 1-99, the NCAA makes no stipulation on defensive players. Two players may also share the same number though they may not play during the same down.
The lowest numbers are often considered the most prestigious, and they are frequently worn not just by specialists and quarterbacks but also by running backs, defensive backs, and linebackers. Kickers and punters are frequently numbered in the 40s or 90s, which are the least in-demand numbers on a college roster. The increased flexibility in numbering of NCAA rosters is needed since NCAA rules allow larger rosters than the NFL; thus teams would frequently exhaust the available numbers for a position under the NFL rules. It is not uncommon for NCAA teams to have duplicate numbers, with an offensive player having the same number as a defensive one—this is allowed as long as both players are not on the field at the same time.

It's interesting that the specific position numberings are strong recommendations, but only the 1-99 numbering and the lack of a preceding 0 are mandated.

I was in a discussion about this a while back (might have been on the Bootie), and someone pointed out to me that the college eligible receiver number rules are quite a bit different from the NFL rules. There's a good summary on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eligible_receiver

Also see page FR-73. That's the page that says offensive players with numbers 50-79 cannot be eligible receivers. (Unlike the NFL, they cannot even report in as eligible for an individual play.)

Re: Andrus Peat...the next Bob Whitfield? - Leftcoast - 05-09-2012

The tackle eligible plays were preceded by frantic jersey swapping on the sidelines - and those were BIG shoulder pads the jerseys had to clear.  Most times two coaches yanked on the arm and neck holes trying to get those shirts off as the play clock ticked.

Fun to watch from the sidelines but pretty nerve-wracking for the coaches (and tackles) I'm sure!

The tackles hung out in front of us so we had ring-side seats but I think the cameras caught this during at least a couple away games.

When Stanford uses an extra offensive lineman, one of the lineman often wears an eligible jersey number, so that he's eligible to catch a pass depending on where he lines up. McGillicuddy and Mabry each had two different jersey numbers.

Didn't McGillicuddy wear like four different numbers that year?  I also recall it confusing the heck out of one of the announcers during (I think) the Notre Dame game, where they had no idea who that guy lead blocking at the goal line was.  I believe the line was something like "He's not even on our roster, I think he might be a tackle!"
