Re: The Barry Sanders Story - Robbie - 05-10-2012

I was with the band in Norman in 1983, and I felt no animosity from the locals, nor did we do anything that would cause us to be negatively remembered all these years later.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - Farm93 - 05-10-2012

He is not even 20 years old.  I am pretty sure anything pre-2005 or so does not count in his mind.

He was at the Fiesta Bowl, so he definitely witnessed that event.  Post-game the love for LSJUMB must have been mighty low for those with OSU or Oklahoma ties.

But he ain't playin' in the band, so who cares if the band is good or bad??  Maybe if we was going to the SWAC this would be a real issue for a player on the team, but not in BCS AQ conference football.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - terry - 05-10-2012

Come on. The Band's reputation precedes it. Everyone knows the Stanford Band is going to be crude or offensive at some point. So if you don't want to be offended, then DON'T WATCH THE BAND. I was at the Fiesta Bowl and I didn't watch the Band at all. If those Oklahoma State folks were offended, it's their own fault, because they decided to watch a group that is known to be offensive. Nobody made them watch.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - washingtonismoney - 05-10-2012

Did we ever get a straight answer about what they considered so offensive? No Oklahoman seems to specify at all. Usually offended people are happy to talk at length about how outrageously offended they are and why they are outrageously offended and so on and so forth.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - Spiny_Norman - 05-10-2012

WIM, my Oklahoma St friends are very specific with their grievances.  The pre-game show was disrespectful to Oklahoma and Oklahomans.  Dust Bowl reference, "sticky livestock," etc.  They believe that the Band played during the game when it was not their turn.  And the OSU fans are particularly chapped that the Band played (at their usual tempo and volume) during the post-game trophy presentation so that the fans could not hear the words of their coach as he accepted the trophy.

As you can tell, the OSU fans have good reason to carry a grudge about the entire University for such heinous behavior.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - Leftcoast - 05-10-2012

The band show at the Fiesta Bowl was really pretty tame and watered down by our standards plus it was almost impossible to hear the announcer.  I read the script later and how anyone could get all that offended by a script based upon confusing lyrics from "Oklahoma!" is beyond me - but believe me they were!

Here's 20 pages of OSU fans explaining how much they hate, hate, hate the Stanford band without ever referencing what actually offended them from the shows.  They probably couldn't hear the announcer either but were SURE they should be deeply offended.

The other issue the Oklahoma fans bring up was the band playing after the game during their award ceremony rather than doffing their hat at the greatness of Cowboy football.  That was probably an unwise move on the band's part but I suspect the OSU fans had made up their minds to be easily offended long before that.

So ... the band watered down the script to be as minimally offensive as possible while still being "LSJUMB" and the OSU fans are squealing with outrage.  Screw 'em.  Next time the band should load both barrels and go after the ethics of T-Boone Pickens, their strangely violent mascot and the wonders of living in a fly-over state.    Let's give 'em a reason to be outraged.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - stanfan - 05-10-2012

It was more than unwise.  It was rude and disrespectful.  The band was asked to stop (by Stanford officials) and refused.  As a result, the band leader was canned.  More is on the way for LSJUMB.  I suspect we'll see some reformation of both concept and execution.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - fullmetal - 05-10-2012

I'm not sure it's reasonable to characterize the entire Stanford fanbase by looking at the actions of the band, but I guess reason has little bearing here.  Most Stanford fans had fled the stadium by the time the trophy presentation started, and I couldn't really hear the band from where I was walking on the concourse at the time (though perhaps the band was aiming at the Ok St. fans or the field below).

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - yvonne - 05-10-2012

I couldn't hear the band, but I could definitely hear the awards presentation from where I was outside.

I would be shocked, and not in the Casablanca sense, if there were a reformation of the band's concept and execution.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - Griffins78 - 05-10-2012

This thread has really degenerated into the wrong direction...

Garvin - thanks for the link. It was a really nice article that provided some good insight that contradicted a lot of the hearsay and common belief about Barry Sanders. I loved that he was so excited about coming to Stanford for a lot of great reasons. And I was very impressed that Mike Sanford did such an outstanding job against one of the toughest recruiting battles in the country. From all the articles and forum postings - it sounded like Andrew Luck and the lack of fan attention is what convinced Sanders to Stanford. With ace recruiters like Mike Sanford, we have a lot going for us and I for one, will sleep a lot better.

Wherever you heard that, it is not correct.  Perhaps you are confused by the fact that the bands staff and management changes at the end of football season every year.

I also think it's funny anyone is offended by the show as I'm pretty sure most of it was quotes from the musical "Oklahoma!"  I guess musicals can be pretty offensive, though, so maybe that's the reason?

Anyways, my guess is that most offended people are offended because someone told them they should be offended, like the Notre Dame fans who are convinced the band has burned effigies of the Pope during halftime and forms pentagrams out of urine after every game.

More importantly, that is a great piece on Barry J.  I can't wait until this class is just dominating people every game.

Wait, what?

I guess it was partly my fault Stanford football stunk from 2002-2006. I mean, nobody made me watch.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - oman - 05-11-2012

My theory is that all the good Okie stuff was used up for the El Paso Sun Bowl show two years earlier.

In the airport on the way home the day after the fiesta bowl I chatted with the Okie state fans and they were really pissed off about the awards ceremony.  They were all a bit confused by the pregame show.

I would just love for the band to tighten it up a bit. Maybe get a core group that plays loud and tight and gives the band just a bit of musical credibility.  No matter where they go parody wise.

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - Hurlburt88 - 05-12-2012

I definitely want the band to stay funny, and a bit more musical credibility would not detract from this!

Re: The Barry Sanders Story - yvonne - 05-12-2012

Here's the Fiesta Bowl pregame show. The boos seem to start at the point of the LAMB formation, which turns into LAME. I still can't hear the line that seems to have sparked the uproar. It's something about a prison. http://youtu.be/MfAy60Cgq3w
