The Andrew Luck Directorship of Offense Endowed -

Stanford Athletics announced today that its offensive coordinator position has been endowed by a very generous gift from an anonymous donor in honor of graduating senior quarterback Andrew Luck.

Quote:"I am very pleased that Andrew Luck's name will be perpetually tied to the Director of Offense position at Stanford," said Shaw. "Because of his great play on the field, his intellect and his great relationships with the coaching staff, Andrew allowed us to do so much on offense the last three years at Stanford. He set the bar high for himself, for every quarterback who comes to Stanford, and for our performance on offense."
That's a PR department manufactured quote, if I ever saw one.
But is he WELL endowed? - Redrum - 05-22-2012
And if so, doesn't that merit a press release of its own?

Just too weird to have an endowment in the name of a kid in his 20s.

The ucb board comments were funny. I was actually shocked that the OC position was not already supported by an endowment. Huh?
In any event their board seemed to speculate that the gift was in the $2 million range. It felt like an Austin Powers moment, as $2 million would seem insufficient.
My quick endowment math would imply that it would need to be much larger. Let's say the OC in the new Pac-12 is expected to get at least $400,000 a year. That would translate into a $10 million gift using classic 4% type numbers.
Then, it is clear that OC salaries are moving up at a rate far faster than inflation and USA incomes. It seems probable that the gift would need to be able to support a $1 million OC by 2015 or so. That would park the gift in the $20 million range.
FWIW - I love the difference in AD's and this gift seems to exemplify those fiscal differences.Â
The UCB AD eagerly awaits the incremental TV revenue and projects that the TV revenue will...enable them to finally balance their annual budget, make stadium interest payments, pay athletic student center payments, pay assistant coaches more AND enable the department to move forward with future phases of the stadium renovation project. Whew ::)
Meanwhile the Stanford AD's position is that the incremental TV revenue money will be nice, but that the few million a year in incremental revenue will be overwhelmed by the escalation in the cost of running a successful AD in two to three years.
After reading articles recently about both ADs it is hard to believe that the two ADs are referencing the same TV contract.

It's funny that people are saying "I can understand a chemistry building, sports field, professorship, department head, etc being endowed with a persons name but a FOOTBALL COACHING POSITION? How gauche and declasse." When did football coaching positions become so virtuous that they shouldn't be tainted by the smear of a personal donation honoring an individual?
Also, note that the entire school is basically funded by the endowment of two individuals making a "donation" in the name of someone they loved/admired: LELAND STANFORD JR! If they can name the school after somebody who never even attended (the horrors), I think they should feel comfortable naming the OC position after the winningest QB in school history.

As much as I admire and am a fan of Luck, I agree that it's a bit odd that Andrew should have something named after him before he even graduates (and do we know for sure he'll be getting his degree?). Do Elway, Plunkett, or Gerhart have anything named after them?

When I first glanced at the headline, I thought that Andrew himself was endowing a scholarship or position. I thought it was a great way to give back. When I saw that it was an honorary naming, I thought it was a
little weird. All-in-all, if someone wants to endow a seat, he can call it what he wants as long as it's not obscene or doesn't reflect badly on the university in some way.

I'm sure Luck had veto power over it, but you can't really turn down a gift to your program like that, even if it is in your name...

The fallout from this is interesting. I'm surprised that it was (a) newsworthy enough to be the top story on the ESPN NCAA football site for two days and (b) the negative reaction from so many non-Stanford fans. Sure, it's the off season, and news is slow. Spring games are over, there's not much recruiting going on, training camp is months away. But still, this has gotten more attention than I would have expected (a humorous use of the story here:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1193261-andrew-lucks-legacy-vs-cheerleader-fail-which-sucks-more-br5)
So clearly, the Stanford PR department was tone deaf on this one. They put it on GoStanford.com, so they were publicizing this as a positive news item. In the end, it does feel a might premature to be honoring someone with what I assume will be an honor in perpetuity, when they haven't graduated yet. And it appears like a desperate attempt to squeeze the absolute maximum value out of the Andrew Luck brand at Stanford before he's gone.
Andrew Luck was a great player. I have no worries that he'll do something Tiger Woods-ish to make Stanford regret this decisions. He deserves all the honors he receives, in my mind. It probably could have been timed better. But in the end, people are just looking for something to point their personal frustration and anger at.

Was reaction really negative? There was certainly some negative reaction, but I wouldn't characterize everyone or even the majority's reaction as negative. The predominant reaction I saw was in the same vein as the 59er alternatives I posted earlier, i.e. an opportunity to make jokes about other schools.

Garvin, my memory is not as good as it should be... but I think if your post had incensed me I'd remember why. So I'm pretty sure it didn't. (Maybe because I was there when the quarterback in question got a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct when he wasn't even in the game? So I share your sentiment, even though I might not express it quite as, um, colorfully.)
