Director's Cup preliminary spring standings -
yvonne - 05-31-2012
It looks like Fullmetal's going to get his wish, and the Hall of Fame Room will have to make room for another Learfield Sports Director's Cup.

The standings have moved around quite a lot since they were last previously published, with the University of South Central and UCLA moving into the top 10 and Kal dropping to 14th from its previous position at 11.
Stanford increased its lead with points for womens water polo (national championship), mens and womens tennis and womens golf. It will add points in baseball and men's golf.
The final points will be adjusted so that only 20 sports (10 men's and 10 women's sports) will be included.

Possible bad news: UCLA's in second place in men's golf, and is in striking range of the championship.

In women's rowing, Michigan finished 2nd, u$c finished 6th, UCLA finished 8th, and Stanford finished 9th.

I'm confused. Wouldn't UCLA have to win five national championships [at 100 pts. each] to overtake us at this point? [or, at least four, assuming that we may have to drop some of our lower-scoring sports to get down to the 10 men-10 women max]? Am I missing something?
Also, in men's golf, I think the NCAA champion is the team that prevails in match play, rather than the stroke play rounds, although I'm not positive about that.

The NACDA Cup is in the bag. The AD is probably already working to determine which football game will offer the best chance to get the award presented in the 20 minute halftime window.
UCLA can do whatever they need to do, but they are not catching Stanford in the NACDA cup standings this year.
UCLA could, in theory, win the Women's Capital One Cup, but that is highly unlikely. Oregon, has a better chance since they could win Softball, a 3X sport, and could also win Track (another 3X specia). But that double win is highly unlikely.
UCLA, like Stanford, has no real chance to win the Men's side of the credit card cup. Stanford would need a CWS win and the right teams to win the other sports.
UCLA grabbing NCAA team titles hurts because they add to their NCAA team title leading tally. The more they win, the more Stanford needs to win to catch up. (FWIW - "only" 2 per year is not that number, so 2011-2012 was not a good one for the NCAA team title race) UCLA almost won a few NCAA titles recently. They were close in women's and men's tennis, they were a top seed in women's golf, and could still win in men's golf.

Sorry for the confusion. I should have explained more. UCLA cannot catch us in the Director's Cup, but winning the championship hurts in our attempt to overtake them in the total number of NCAA championships.

Okay, got it. No argument there.Â
From what I just read about our incoming Women's VB class, maybe things will start looking better again there pretty soon.

FWIW - Golf is a best stroke play format. The team of 5(?) goes out each day and their best 4 rounds of that day count towards the team total. The daily team totals are then tallied up across 3 or 4 days, depending on the event. The players are simultaneously playing for an individual stroke play championship.
The teams go out in batches. Normally 3 or 4 people from different schools in a group and then their teams are represented in ~5 consecutive groups. This is why during the championships the table will note that UCLA is playing holes 13-16, for example. Like other match play, the best teams play together in the final batch at the end of each round to reduce the odds that weather changes during the day unfairly alter the standings of the event.
Conference championship events normally have a similar format. I am sure we will all get a chance to watch the Pac-12 golf tournament next year on the Pac-12 network. ;)Â

Don't the individual tennis titles and the doubles tennis title count toward our overall championship count? (Thinking of the women's tourney here...)

Farm93, NCAA men's golf is now decided in match play. stroke play for 3 days to qualify for match play, and then the top 8 teams go into match play. I believe this is year 4 of this format.

fullmetal - there was another thread on this earlier in the week. individual titles are not included in the team championship. We are number one with 400+ individual titles compared to 103 team championships.

slide is correct.
Stanford struggled mightily on Wednesday (round 2) and did not qualify for the match play portion of the event.Â

My unofficial Excel-based tracking shows that Stanford will win its 18th consecutive cup. The 310 point lead over Florida will shrink. But with only Men's Golf, Baseball, Women's Track & Field, and Men's Track and Field remaining, the Gators most probably won't catch the Cardinal.
In Men's Golf, it looks like Florida will pick up about 10 points (63 vs. 54).Â
If national ranking is a reasonable predictor for Baseball, Florida gets 100 points for winning it and Stanford gets about 64 for losing in the Super-Regional.
Florida will pick up points over Stanford in both T&F championships, again based on national rankings.
None of this has been adjusted for the 10-sport per gender limit.
I've attached my spreadsheet in case anyone else wants to contribute.

Annoying when the Men's and Women's titles are decided in different formats in back to back weekends. Oh well. Slide you are right, which is alarming because UCLA is definitely looking like a co-favorite on this course.
FWIW - Got to give props to 'Bama. They could sweep Golf, winning both the men's and women's version, they won women's gymnastics, and then they had that football thing. Not bad. Not much beyond those four sports, but that is still impressive (with or without men's golf)

Come by the Hall of Fame Room to see the first 14 Cups, no room so the others are in the AD. Soon the Hall of Fame Room closes, so getting close to the last chance.Â

Hall of Fame room is closing???
Re: Director's Cup preliminary spring standings -

The expansion AD is for FB coaches to have their own offices ( no Shaw doesn't move he already has the Bathroom, LOL) and conference rooms. New weight training and also Aquatic coaches. While the building is going on the FB Coaches move into the Hall of Fame Room. After expansion Development/Fund Raising moves permanently into the Hall of Fame. What happens to the Hall? Maybe spread into all the Coaches areas and in cases upstairs above the BB Court, maybe a new Building next to Maples, but that seems doubtful.

That's bad. The teams earned the awards, but having them in a single place concentrates the common accomplishments. It adds to the idea that Stanford athletics is a whole, and that it is a place of excellence. It also adds to the fan experience.
Are the Rosenbergs still alive? How do they feel about this?

Julius and Ethel? I think it's safe to say both still dead. Not of natural causes.

Sydney and Theodore. The Arrillaga Center is less than 20 years old, so the Hall of Fame room benefactors may still be alive.
