From an ESPN article on the top-10 basketball programs (

It's something what we've all known, and the data clearly shows, but the average fan probably doesn't realize about Duke's admissions standards for basketball vis-a-vis other academically oriented schools.
Quote:Not that getting into Duke as a men's basketball player is easy. It's more difficult than many of its blue-blood rivals, which is another consideration for the ranking. But Duke athletics has often been more flexible than some of the nation's other top schools -- see: Stanford -- in granting admission for men's players.
I wonder if Dawkins appreciated this difference before he accepted the job.

If he played and coached at Cincinnati or Kentucky I could imagine he might not have known about the Stanford admissions challenge.
And yet BECAUSE he played and coached at Duke my guess is he was very well aware of the differences in admissions standards between Duke and Stanford. I would guess during Stanford's late 90s run, they probably used that fact about Stanford to get and keep recruits.

I suspect Dawkins was very aware of the lack of limitations on basketball admissions for Duke players. he was an assistant coach for Duke when Sean Dockery was admitted with a reported 2.3 gpa and a then 15 ACT (not even NCAA minimums).

I suspect Bowlsby ran Dawkins through the differences at Stanford. Dawkins also has had the advantage of having Rick Shaw as Dean versus Robin's Reign of Terror.

Let's be real. Johnnie had no idea what Stanford required and Bowlsby did nothing to ediucate him. Why didn't we sign anyone for year. JD actually thought Duke was Stanford.

I spoke to JD at an alumni function. My impression was that he thought Stanford was pretty much the same as Duke from a recruiting standpoint. I did not know what to tell him. I doubt he would have listened to me. Guess he found out the hard way.
