WBB: Entering Frosh, a surprise name - 81alum - 06-14-2012

The Fast Break Club reports the names of 3 incoming frosh for the WBB class.

http://fbccardinalnews.blogspot.com/

We already knew a lot about Tess Picknell, the 6'5" defensive shot-blocking center from Oregon.  The highest rated player is 6'3" Aly Beebe who was rated in the top ten until she tore her knee up and missed her senior year.

The surprise is Kiran Lakhian, a 5'11" shooting guard from Texas who was going to be a walk-on and was awarded a scholarship.  My guess is that when Boothe decided to graduate they decided to use her scholarship on Kiran.

I cannot find out very much about Kiran.  Other than one short scouting report that claims she has a good outside shot.  Does anyone have any information about her?

oman, she's a Plano West student--up your alley? :)

She's listed as a 6'0" SG/SF by the Plano West website.  She plays as a forward for her AAU team, the Texas Express Elite: http://www.texasexpresselite.org/index.cfm?load=page&page=4

And her coach uses her at all positions: http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/high-school/post/_/id/10114/plano-west-downs-desoto-in-meadows-classic
Quote:Just because Kiran Lakhian is the tallest Plano West player, don’t expect the 5-11 senior to be limited to playing in the paint.

The versatile Lakhian did a little bit of everything, even handling the ball in the backcourt at crucial times, to help the Lady Wolves defeat DeSoto, 57-49, in the second round of the 61st Sandra Meadows Classic on Tuesday evening at Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena.

“To tell you the truth, I’m not really sure what my position is any more,‘’ said Lakhian, who led the Lady Wolves with 11 points. “Our whole team is versatile. I think I’m a guard. That’s what I played when I was a freshman.’’

Plano West coach Don Patterson said he utilized Lakhian at all five positions during the 2010-2011 season.

Quote:Very nice stroke from the outside. She has the moves to score from the inside. Shows real skills with the ball. Can get up and down the court and hustles throughout the game.

She attended the tryout camp for the Canadian U19 worlds roster during the 2011 season (born in Toronto).

Thanks for tracking those down, fullmetal.  Those short clips do seem to show her as having some nice inside moves.  It is so hard to estimate how a high school player will do in college, but hopefully the coaches saw a lot of potential in her.

By my count, we now are at 14 scholarships even after Kiran--they seem to be saving an extra for next year which apparently is a good class.  Otherwise with only Ruef and Joslyn scheduled to graduate we would only have 2.  This way there will be three.

For 2013 ESPN has Karlie Samuelson (5'11" guard) listed as a verbal commit to Stanford, while considering Oderah Chidom ( 6'3" forward/center from Oakland) and Peyton Whitted (6'2" wing from Georgia.)  Karlie is Bonnie's little sister and she has an even younger sister who is a "rising star."  Makes me wonder if there will be a Samuelson and an Ogwumike playing together for a long, long time.  Erica is on the 2015 watch list.

You can get a better take on Kiran's abilities by watching several of the videos below. They're from her high school website. I fell in love with her team's style of play and wound up watching every one of the videos (they're really well done). What a relentless press (hands everywhere) and commitment to team-play! Her team goes at least ten players (5'7''-5'11'') deep with no discernable drop-off in skill or effort; so much so that they almost seem interchangeable. One critical thing Kiran will bring with her: she has been well-coached: Watching these videos, you can't help being impressed with how quickly each player makes decisions ... the right decisions ... and how rapidly they move the ball.

Kiran starts, but it seems everyone gets about the same amount of minutes. Her play/manner reminds me of Jillian Harmon (except Kiran can shoot the 3). Her number is 20, but the number is black on a blue uniform, so it's sometimes hard to pick up. It's easier to look for her hairbob. Only she and #24 have it up in that style.

Lastly, I noticed that her mother is a doctor of internal medicine, having graduated from one of the top 6 medical schools in Punjab (India).
