Nottingham and Nunes, musings - ChicagoCard - 07-09-2012

For what it's worth, not much, apparently Josh Nunes verbally committed to Tennessee before signing with Stanford. He had strong interest if not offers (I believe offers) from Notr.Dam. and Florida. (I blew off a few minutes reading a long post on him on the Univ. Tenn. equivalent to the Cardboard.) Nottingham had less national appeal if I can put it that way but he commented “I’m very interested in leaving California” in an article on scout.com after he'd gotten his first offer which was from Wyoming. There was also something somewhere on that Univ. Tenn. blog site about Nunes not having played QB very long... not to mention somebody suggesting as a Californian he might not be tough enough for the SEC. Plenty of posters dissented on that last one though.

For perspective: - Redrum - 07-09-2012

Nunes was a Tennessee commit but HC Fulmer was forced out at the end of the 2008 season.  Also note that Nunes had offers from Florida (under Urban Meyer) Oklahoma, ASU, BYU and Nebraska.    Tennessee when it recruited and got Nunes' commitment had played in the SEC championship game.  It was a defensible, if not a very good,  choice.    A better one was to take a Stanford offer,  play closer to home under the charismatic Harbaugh.  Better school, too.

It's sort of interesting that opinion has galvanized so much behind Nottingham--nearly everyone seemed to think before spring practice it'd be him (I was guilty) and even now I'd guess the majority think it'll still be him. To me, it looks like Nunes has at least a slight edge.

Anyway, if you're trying to divine differences in their college quality, I'm not sure their high school quality provides much daylight. As Redrum notes Nunes has better offers, but the recruiting gurus liked Nottingham a smidge better. So, you know, who knows.

(By the way, isn't it at least a little odd that so many people have strong opinions? I definitely know people who will be almost offended if Nottingham isn't the guy over Nunes, which is odd since neither has taken a competitive snap and therefore has done to differentiate himself.)

Re: Nottingham and Nunes, musings - ChicagoCard - 07-09-2012

Found an Andy Staples (SI.com) article on a Tennessee game that Nunes and his family attended which may have swayed Nunes away. It was bad game for Tenn with booing that seemed directed at the Tenn QB, something which according to Staples pissed off Nunes' father. (This had come up in a muffled way in that string I mentioned on the U. Tenn. football blog.)

Anyway, about Nunes and Nottingham... there's the general awareness that Nottingham was 2nd string last year. But Nunes had accomplished the same thing moving up to 2nd string in the 2010 season after coming in with the class of '09. Then there was an injury issue that may have factored into Nottingham's opportunity, not sure how that went.

without going back to dig into the e-archives, IIRC Nottingham was a bit of a late bloomer who kind of burst on the scene during the summer between his Junior and Senior seasons, which may help explain why Nunes had the better offer list, if he went through his junior year as a more "on the radar" prospect.  Interestingly, after Nunes de-committed from Tennessee, the Vols ended up with another late-bloomer from California, Tyler Bray, who I believe has done OK.

Re: Nottingham and Nunes, musings - ChicagoCard - 07-10-2012

Sorry for the reply to my own reply. But according to a late August 2010 Wilner article (that quotes Harbaugh), Alex Loukas began that season as the backup. At some point after that Nunes must have overtaken Loukas.

And here's a quote from a Rivals recruiting writer... "There's a reason why (Nunes) has 30 scholarship offers," Rivals recruiting analyst Jeremy Crabtree wrote on his Web site. "All the big schools want him. Very accurate ball, nice spin, very good fundamentals. He's a guy that needs to find the right system that fits him, and he'll be very successful as a college quarterback."

The right system comment meaning pro style? Anyway, have beaten this horse beyond death by now.

Nottingham had committed to UCLA as the QB in their class before signing with us.  He was also a big time recruit.  Nunes had Stanford posters on his bedroom wall when Harbaugh finally visited and offered.

Will Dallas Lloyd be on the sideline this year?  Kind of interested in that guy, just from the mission angle.  And I think we need a blondie to take the reins, just from a style perspective.

Seven weeks?

I thought it was a knee as he was going in to score against Kal in the rout.

Although Nunes is blonde-headed isn't he, despite having a Portuguese surname.

That'd be good. Or what about El Rubio, Clint Eastwood's character in the spaghetti westerns. I think Nunes means son of Nuno.

Nooner!

Re: Nottingham and Nunes, musings - oman - 07-11-2012

El Nunio?  (With a tilde.)

How about: King Andrew the Second? - Redrum - 07-11-2012

That way we won't have to trash the T-shirts if  Nottingham gets the starting nod.

Re: Nottingham and Nunes, musings - biggles95 - 07-11-2012

It is beyond obvious that Nunes is the superior QB and has way more knowledge of the offense than Nottingham will ever have.  I have had the honor of shaking Mr. Nunes' hand and been lucky enough to speak to him, he is the man for the job!!!  I want a championship, and Josh Nunes has to be the QB in order for us to get there.

Re: Nottingham and Nunes, musings - doublespiral - 07-11-2012

Thanks for joining the board to chime in, Josh.

Re: Nottingham and Nunes, musings - Hank 91 - 07-11-2012

brobdingnagian news here. I fired up my NCAA 2013 game for the first time this afternoon, and EA Sports has Brett Nottingham installed as the starter. I think we can put this thread to bed now.

I know you're being sarcastic, but look what else they did to the roster... maddening. Skov at only a 79 overall and 3rd string, and Amanam as an All-American 91 overall CB? Meanwhile per usual Notre Dame's ratings are through the roof, A+ overall with all of their quarterbacks rated 80+, of course.

Re: Nottingham and Nunes, musings - Hank 91 - 07-15-2012

Agreed. I couldn't believe the Skov rating. I know we're talking about a video game here, but it's still ridiculous. It's a shame they don't update midseason. And while we're on the topic, I'm still terribly bitter that RG3 is on the cover instead of Mr. Luck.

Oh, another thing. We're really supposed to believe that the highest rated player on the roster is Sam Schwartzstein? Really?
