Eh, that was a bit embarrassing.Â
I realize Shaw is Shaw, but you have an audience, both there and watching, who would like to see just a smidgen of enthusiasm.Â
They should have at least drawn straws to see who had to tell a joke.

I think it was a two-way thing. Remember mutually assured destruction? This was mutually assured boredom--the questioners seemed basically uninterested in asking anything longtime followers of the team wouldn't know already.
Newsiest element, I suppose, is Jemari Roberts to TE. A reflection of what isn't happening at the third TE spot? Guess so. (I expect Kaumatule--who was mentioned again by name by Shaw--to redshirt while recovering from that ACL tear + learn a new position.)

I noticed he was listed at 233 on the latest roster, so not a surprise to see him moving to TE. Perhaps he'll find a home there.

Shaw praised his players after being asked about them. I think he easily could have come in and said - here to my left are two guys who have really earned the respect of their teammates and the coaching staff because they represent, etc., etc.
Not for information's sake. Mostly for courtesy's sake.
Harbaugh made blue collar kind of cool, and all I am really asking Shaw is to not make it look painful.

Agree. If you're going to make all that effort to attend the Media Day - at least make an effort to make the most of it. Market your product.
Roberts to Tight End. Well, why not? - Redrum - 07-24-2012
Has had zero impact at WR. His signing was one of the great head-scratchers of that recruit class (2009). Four stars, offers from Oregon, Colorado and Wazzu. In the running with Jamal Rashaad Patterson to win award for Most Complete Disappearing Act. But maybe playing against LBs will turn him into a beast. Hope so.

Why was it embarrassing though? Seems like Shaw as he's been at other press conferences. There is something slightly uncomfortable that sometimes comes out, but I also personally don't care much about a coach's personality per se, as long as he's not an embarrassment. Makes me wonder how he is with his players. Even before he got the head coaching job we heard how popular he was with the players... and recruiting has gone well so far under him.

I think a big issue with Roberts is whether he really wants to be good, or is he happy just to be here. . . .

Hmm.
My Stanford education in a nutshell.
Okay, disappointing rather than embarrassing.

Shaw and the Stanford reps did a number of other interviews.
Here's Shaw with Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley:

Here's Shaw on ESPN 1080:

Here's Shaw on ESPN 700 (Utah):

Here's Thomas and Taylor on ESPN 700:

Can't say I've listened to all of those, but to all you dour people who'd like more enthusiasm...Shaw is more enthusiastic and interesting with Kellerman and Wiley.
I'm just going to guess everyone was worn down by the end of the day.

I'm not sure I've even seen him line up with the offense. Maybe seen him on some special teams coverage units. At least JRP has had a few token appearances. But, maybe TE will be his position. Would be good for him and the team both.

wim -- good call on Shaw with Max and Marcellus. he seemed to be much more relaxed. I liked the close (not sure if Max or Marcellus) -- "he sold me"
"He sold me" - Redrum - 07-25-2012
It's great to "sell the product" but of all the venues to sell in, the media days are among the lower ranked. ( Nice turn of phrase: "Mutually assured boredom." ) Media days are fueled by the media's needs, not the needs of the players, football programs or the schools. I don't even think the fans care all that much except many are hardwired to react like excited Labradors any
time any
thing football related comes within sight or hearing. In many ways, the clunkiness of past Pac-8/Pac-10 media days were refreshing compared to the Roman circus that was and is the SEC Media Days. Watching some of that makes you cringe like one does when watching those TV reality shows where 4-year old girls compete to be "crowned" the most beautiful, charming and talented.
Shaw evidently sells the product well with recruits. Well, so far he has. His charisma is all short range, working best sitting in a recruit family's living room or across a desk in his office. There are guys like Les Miles, Nick Saban and in his day Pete Carroll whose charisma can blow down walls from a distance. That's not Shaw. But as long as he can sell the product where it counts : in the locker room/ sideline we'll be OK. Â

I am psyched for the season. Stepfan was the only player that actually sat up straight while speaking. David kept it close to the vest. We are going to crush people this year. Definitely being over looked and disrespected by the media, as usual. Oh, but thy lost Toby. Oh, but they lost Harbaugh. Oh, but they lost Luck. This team will smash people.

Yeah, when we get done with Duke, they'll return to Raleigh-Durham via FedEx. Now, sell that message down in South Central.

David Shaw is nothing if not confident in his players. My question is does he show too much confidence in them?Â
It's one thing to say a guy is a very good player and will be valuable to the team. It's another to put them on pedestals by saying they are the best in the country, etc., something Shaw does quite a bit. I mean right now he is on record with:
* This OL could start for many D1 programs
* Wayne Lyons is a future AA
* Alex Carter is an NFL Corner
* Ryan Hewitt is the most versatile football player in America
* Stepfan Taylor is the most underrated RB in America
I know Harbaugh never shied from expectations and felt no compunction about talking up his guys. Shaw just seems to have taken effusive praise to another level, and in some cases before guys have ever done anything on the field. It may be healthy, unhealthy, show Shaw's football knowledge, or have no bearing on anything at all. I'm curious what Stanford fans think.
