The Penn State Gold Rush is on. -

SC strikes the most important blow, getting Silas Redd as the second part of a 1-2 punch with Curtis McNeal. Redd's a good back but not a fantastic one--still, with all the other pieces in the SC offense, the addition of another one makes the arsenal that much more potent.
59ers seem to be getting PSU reserve linebacker Khairi Fortt. Fortt has spent two seasons as an impact reserve linebacker; it seems Nittany Lion fans felt he might well be a reserve again in his junior year. So at worst he's an impact reserve for a team that was depleted at inside linebacker.
Rumor has it UW is after a PSU OL. And I'm sure most Pac-12 teams are after someone or another, except for us, of course.

I can see Fortt starting, Cal's LBs group is a far cry from ours. And they got Cecil Whiteside back after he was booted. Having both will help them quite a bit.

Having Whiteside back is big, but he and Chris McCain are both no more than 230. When you play a 3-4 defense like the Bares do, you need the OLBs to be big enough to hold the edge on outside runs. Whiteside might be stout enough, but McCain is 6-6 with a high center of gravity, so having Whiteside back is significant. Having Fortt will give them four high quality guys at ILB.Â
Honestly, Whiteside and Fortt could make California's front seven on par with Stanford's.Â

I don't agree with that at all but I think those 2 definitely make their LBs above average for the conference.

How is this whole Penn State transfer thing working? I have heard their players are free to transfer and play right away. I guess my questions are:
- Do the teams get an extra scholarship for each PSU player they sign? If so, what is to prevent the entire team from, say, signing with USC and creating a 150 scholie powerhouse
- If the teams don't get an extra scholie, how are they making room for these guys? Are they cutting other players? Are they having the PSU kids redshirt and reducing next year's recruiting class? And are they redshirting at Penn State or at the new school?  And if they have no redshirt year left, are they going to play Juco or D2 for a year while they await their open scholie at the new D1 destination?Â
I have to think the NCAA thought carefully about this stuff so as to not give any team an advantage, but I am having a hard time conceptualizing a truly "fair" system.Â

The teams do get an extra scholarship, unless they're under a limit already, as USC is. In USC's case, a walk-on player will likely have to give up a scholarship he had earned to make room for Redd, or if another player is academically ineligible, Redd can take his spot.
So USC can still only have 75 total scholarships. Say Redd transferred to Stanford however, we could have 86. I don't believe there is any codified reason why a massive number of PSU players couldn't just transfer to one school, but I think it would be unlikely based on logistics and playing time issues.

Thanks for the info.
It is sort of crazy to think they could all go to the same school. If I were, say, Indiana, I would hire their coaches and offer the entire team as a package deal. They'd go from 1-11 to 8-4 overnight.Â

More accurately, I think schools not under sanctions-related limits can exceed the 85 schollie limit for this year. They will have to conform to the limit next year (i.e. they'll have one less open spot in the next recruiting class). At least, that's my understanding.
